Soranda Louis As Cover Story Interview – March 2025 Magazine Edition

How do you introduce yourself?

My name is Soranda Louis and I am the author of Church with Grandma, which is book 1 the Adventures with Grandma series. I was born and raised in the historical town of Fort Pierce, FL. I hold an M.F.A degree in Writing from Savannah College of Art and Design and my grandma taught me how to read and write when I was just three years old.

While my mom was working to support my sister and I, my grandmother took me to church throughout the week. I regularly attended Sunday service, youth ministry, and Vacation Bible School. When I wasn’t participating in church activities, I was at the library reading, participating in a Girl Scouts events, dance class, symphonic band, or performing in a play.

Childhood to Adulthood – How was your transition from childhood to adulthood and what are the bad and good things you remember?

My spiritual relationship with God was not always strong. As the only black girl in school I was singled out and bullied sometimes. As a child, I found myself asking why God made me have brown skin. As I’ve matured into my faith and into womanhood, I’ve been able to focus on my identity as a Christian, rather than my identity being a Black woman. I have a strong comfort in knowing that God created me exactly how I should be and he does not make mistakes. We all have unique attributes that make us special to God, and my goal is to spread the messages of love snd acceptance to the next generation.

Struggle – What hardships have you gone through in life?

When I was 6 years old  I lost 1/3 of my hearing and needed to have surgery. I also had chronic strep throat which made it difficult to speak sometimes. As a result, my reading comprehension scores were not where they needed to be. I was blessed to have a very attentive mother who spent countless hours taking me to doctor’s  appointments and made sure I had a reading specialist in school. Coincidentally, my weakness has now become my strength. I’m a published author and trained writer, who can encourage children to read and write.

What do people usually not know about you?

At heart, I’m a very shy and a private person. I was the last person in highschool to get a Facebook page. I’ve always been a late bloomer in branching out with social interaction. However, God has equipped me with humor and charisma. So, once I get to know an individual and  become more comfortable in a setting, I tend to open up more.

What sets you apart from your competitors in the industry and in life?

As a writer I know that there are millions of stories either waiting to be told or they have already been published and told. So, I don’t necessarily see other writers and authors as competitors, being that we all have a natural right to tell our stories. Instead, I see them as neighbors who like me had an urge at one point in time to share their story with the world.

Storytelling is one of the oldest pass times in history and has been the crux of passing along traditions and important historical information. It is an honor to be in the ranks of other writers, and in the company of published children’s authors who have already paved the way in the children’s book sector. On the other hand, one might say that my book series— The Adventures with Grandma series, is unique because each book is based on true inspirational accounts of how my Grandma facilitated my spiritual growth with God.

What expert advice would you like to give?

Trust God’s timing in all things that you are pursuing.  And remember, “you reap what you sow” (Galatians 6:7) which means the time, energy, and consistency that you’re putting into your craft or business, will certainly show on the other side once your project/product has reached its completion.
