Rachel Fanning As Exclusive Cover Story – July 2023

How do you introduce yourself?

Rachel Fanning: Rachel {Kline} Fanning.

Childhood to Adulthood – How was your transition from childhood to adulthood and what are the bad and good things you remember?

Rachel Fanning: Unfortunately, my journey from childhood to adulthood has been fraught with challenges and adversity. The complexity and depth of my experiences during this period are difficult to fully capture in a concise manner. However, I can provide a brief overview. At the age of 13, I underwent a significant relocation from a small town in Illinois to a somewhat larger city within the same state. This transition was prompted by my father’s residence at my grandparent’s house, which became my intermittent home until I reached the age of 19.

During my time in the city, I embraced a more spontaneous and autonomous lifestyle, forging connections with a diverse range of individuals. While some of these friendships proved to be positive influences, I also encountered those whose company I would have been better off avoiding. Throughout these experiences, I have held steadfast in my belief in the importance of life’s teachings, as I have encountered and overcome numerous trials and tribulations.

The circumstances that led to my relocation to live with my father triggered a profound sense of disorientation and loss within me. It was as if my life had been abruptly upended, leaving me feeling adrift and uncertain During this tumultuous period, I couldn’t help but internalize a sense of rejection, as if my family no longer wanted me around. It seemed as though past wrongdoings were unjustly projected onto me, and I felt unfairly judged for not having the knowledge or understanding to navigate the complexities of my circumstances that began at the tender age of 5.

The transition into adolescence already comes with its own set of trials and tribulations, as we grapple with the multitude of changes taking place within ourselves and our surroundings. However, in addition to these already challenging aspects, I found myself faced with the daunting task of mustering the courage to open up to my mother about the previously undisclosed instances of abuse that my brother and I had endured. This added layer of confrontation and only amplified the fear and uncertainty that accompanied my journey into teenagehood.

I have distinct memories of spending summers at my Uncle and Aunts pig farm in Palmyra. I would eat a farmer’s breakfast made by my aunt. After indulging in the delicious meal, I would often have my hair braided or styled, before donning overalls and mud boots. Eager to assist my uncle and cousin with the daily responsibilities of running a farm, I enthusiastically embraced the chores. However, my adventurous spirit sometimes led me astray, venturing into areas I probably shouldn’t have, like the enclosure where the formidable boar was kept. I recall climbing the fence, perching atop it, and feeling a mix of exhilaration and relief for never having accidentally tumbled into the boar’s domain. Reflecting back, I consider myself fortunate to have escaped any potentially perilous encounters during my escapades on the farm.

Additionally, I have cherished memories of spending summers adventuring around the quaint town of Alsey, Illinois, alongside my female cousin. However, such adventures were not without their challenges, as my older male cousin and his friends would occasionally tease and taunt us. Despite the occasional teasing, I found solace and joy in the company of my other uncle and aunt along with the warm hospitality they extended. Their home was an oasis of fun-filled activities, including invigorating swims in their pool, playful interactions with their hunting beagles, and on occasion, engaging in friendly target practice with BB guns or bows in the expansive fields surrounding their property.

I also found great enjoyment in the company of my two older cousins, who, despite facing mental challenges, showcased remarkable qualities. Their work ethic and dedication were truly admirable, as they approached their tasks with diligence and determination. Moreover, their artistic abilities were awe-inspiring, as they demonstrated immense talent in various creative endeavors. Witnessing their dedication to their crafts and witnessing their artistic prowess was a source of inspiration and admiration for me. Spending time with them allowed me to appreciate the uniqueness of their perspectives and the beauty they brought into the world through their artistry.

These experiences offered me a sense of excitement and a chance to revel in the simple pleasures of summer.

Struggle – What hardships have you gone through in life?

Rachel Fanning: In life, we often find ourselves on unexpected paths, encountering challenges that push us to reassess who we are and where we’re headed. For myself, a work incident over two years ago became a pivotal moment, prompting a profound reevaluation of identity and purpose, all while grappling with ongoing health issues.

This extraordinary journey of self-discovery involves a courageous quest to chart a new course, despite physical setbacks. In the aftermath of a work-related accident that resulted in injuries, including carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, dequervains tendinosis, and nerve damage, the path to recovery has been arduous. A series of medical procedures, such as carpal tunnel surgery and nerve release in the forearm and right hand, provided some relief, but an MRI revealed additional nerve damage in the neck, paving the way for potential neck surgery.

The prospect of such a procedure presents both hope for alleviating pain and trepidation about the recovery process. Consultations with medical experts have become a crucial part of the decision-making process, allowing for an informed and holistic approach to restoring physical well-being.

Navigating these health concerns has been compounded by the complexities of the legal realm. Regretfully, legal representation was not initially sought, leading to challenges in securing proper compensation and support. After Workers’ Compensation benefits ceased after a brief period, the pursuit of alternative sources of income presented a new set of obstacles.

Amidst these hurdles, however, there is an unwavering resolve to reclaim agency and purpose. Exploring avenues such as disability benefits has become essential for finding stability in an ever-changing landscape while striving toward independence and the pursuit of self-employment.

Through this journey, there is an acknowledgment of the long and challenging road ahead. Balancing health needs, building a business, and seeking a fulfilling career all contribute to the intricate tapestry of my life. Patience and perseverance will be paramount as new pathways unfold, allowing for personal growth, resilience, and the potential for transformative success.

What do people usually not know about you?

Rachel Fanning: Beyond what may be apparent to most, one aspect of myself that remains somewhat concealed is my passion for collecting books on a diverse range of subjects. In a world dominated by internet connectivity and the rise of AI, I find solace in the timeless allure and tangible presence of physical books. The act of disconnecting from the digital realm and immersing myself in the world of my imagination, intertwined with the pages of a book, is an experience that I treasure.

Books have always been a steadfast companion, providing me with a sanctuary where I can explore new ideas, embark on thrilling adventures, and learn about a myriad of topics. Regardless of the technological advancements, I take comfort in knowing that I will always have access to the wisdom and inspiration that books offer.

In addition to my literary pursuits, I have a deep appreciation for old muscle cars, which often leads me to car shows. This interest was nurtured during my formative years, as I grew up frequenting my father’s and his friends’ mechanic and paint shops. While these environments may not have been conventional for a young girl, I was exposed to a world where men spoke openly about subjects not typically meant for young ears.

These experiences shaped my passion for classic automobiles and engendered a profound respect for the craftsmanship and history behind these iconic vehicles. Attending car shows allows me to immerse myself in an environment where I can marvel at the impressive array of vintage muscle cars, embracing the nostalgia and appreciating the artistry that went into their creation.

These hidden passions offer a glimpse into the multifaceted nature of my persona, where the love for literature and the allure of classic automobiles converge in an exploration of imagination, knowledge, and appreciation for our tangible world.

What sets you apart from your competitors in the industry and in life?

I have become a warrior in my own life, forged through the influence of strong women who played pivotal roles in my upbringing, whether they were family members or close family friends. Their guidance and support have instilled in me a resolute spirit that drives me forward.

Now, at the age of 45, I find myself embarking on a new chapter as I navigate a career transition. While the healthcare field has been a significant part of my professional life, circumstances have necessitated a change of direction. Rather than being disheartened by this shift, I approach it with curiosity and eagerness to learn.

My quest for knowledge is unceasing, and I actively seek out new opportunities to expand my understanding and skills. I am committed to implementing what I learn and applying newfound knowledge to enable personal growth and professional development.

Restarting at this juncture in life is not an easy task, but my tenacity and resilience propel me forward. Instead of seeing challenges as roadblocks, I view them as opportunities for growth and self-discovery. Every obstacle encountered on this journey becomes a stepping stone toward a renewed sense of purpose and achievement.

As I embark on this new phase of my life, I am inspired by those who have come before me. I carry with me the lessons and strength instilled by the strong women who have shaped my upbringing Their guidance serves as a beacon of inspiration, reminding me of the incredible potential within me.

I am a strong woman, bolstered by the influence of other strong women, and driven to defy expectations, surpass limitations, and embrace the vast possibilities that lie ahead. With each step I take, I pave the way for a future filled with personal growth, triumph, and the satisfaction of knowing that I have fought my way through life, emerging as a warrior.

To nurture these diverse paths, I actively seek opportunities for continuous growth and development. In embracing freelance work, business website development, herbal entrepreneurship, and photography, I am weaving together a tapestry of skills, knowledge, and passion, fostering both personal fulfillment and the capacity to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others.

What are your food preferences and physical attributes?

Rachel Fanning: I am 5’9 and told I have a beautiful smile and bright brown eyes. While I may be a little chunky, I am working towards a healthier lifestyle of eating and exercising. I believe that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes and I am proud of who I am. I  grew up eating mainly animal meat that was hunted for and meat processed from the farm as well as fish we caught.

I also grew up with fresh vegetables, it was a rarity to eat a vegetable from a can. While I still love all of that, I have been trying to incorporate a healthier lifestyle of eating and exercise.

Unfortunately, due to my upper body/arm/hands injuries, I am not able to work out my upper body like I want to. However, I have found ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle by doing exercises that don’t involve my upper body such as walking, stair climbing, stationary cycling, and doing leg exercises in the pool. I also modify my routine by skipping exercises that require me to use the injured part of my body.

Your love life, relationships and family?

Rachel Fanning: I have fond memories of my grandparents’ unwavering dedication to imparting valuable life lessons to me. Looking back, I regret not fully embracing their wisdom and advice during my younger years. They generously shared their knowledge on essential skills such as canning, sewing, and other homestead and homemaking practices that hold immense value.

I now recognize the significance of these teachings and wish I had taken the opportunity to learn and hone these valuable skills. The guidance provided by my grandparents was a testament to their love and commitment to equipping me with practical knowledge that would have served me well in various aspects of life. Though I can no longer turn back time, I carry their wisdom with me and strive to apply it whenever possible.

At the youthful age of 19, I welcomed the arrival of my first daughter, a momentous occasion that marked the beginning of a transformative chapter in my life. Just two years later, at the age of 21, I experienced the sheer joy and profound responsibility of welcoming a second daughter into the world. These blessings bestowed upon me the cherished title of mother and later grandmother to three boys and one girl, igniting a deep sense of love and fulfillment.

The cherished moments I share with my precious grandchildren are treasured beyond measure. Each interaction, whether it be playful laughter or heartfelt conversations, holds extraordinary significance in my heart. As a grandmother, I embrace my role with immense gratitude, cherishing the opportunity to witness these young souls grow and flourish.

Becoming a grandparent has brought a new dimension of joy and purpose to my life. I revel in the unique bonds we form, filled with affection, guidance, and cherished memories. Every interaction serves as a reminder of the profound impact one generation can have on the next, as we pass down wisdom, values, and love.

The precious relationship between a grandparent and a grandchild is a testament to the enduring power of family and the intergenerational connections that shape our lives. It is a privilege to be a part of their lives, to offer guidance, support, and unwavering love as they navigate their own paths.

Through the shared experiences, laughter, and family traditions, each moment spent with my grandchildren becomes a small yet significant thread in the tapestry of their lives. These moments truly exemplify the profound rewards that can be found in the role of grandparenthood and serve as a reminder of the indelible bonds that unite families across generations.

What expert advice would you like to give?

Rachel Fanning: When life gets tough, it’s easy to get bogged down by negativity. But it’s important to remember that you have the power to change your circumstances. The first step is to know your self-worth. Take some time to go inwards and reflect on yourself. Who are you? What do you want out of life? Once you have a clear idea of what you want, make a plan for your life. What steps do you need to take to achieve your goals? It’s important to stay true to yourself throughout this process.

Don’t let anyone else dictate what you should do with your life. If you encounter negativity along the way, cut those connections out of your life. You don’t need that kind of energy dragging you down. Remember that it’s okay if things don’t work out the way you hoped. Life is full of surprises, and sometimes we have to reassess our plans and figure out another way to get where we want to go. The key is to keep moving forward and never give up on yourself.
