Mic Mountain As Cover Story Interview – October 2026 Magazine Edition

How do you introduce yourself?

My name is Mic Mountain, born Michael Stephen Mountain in Mount Holly, New Jersey, and raised in the Washington, D.C. area. I’m an independent Hip-Hop artist, emcee, producer, and graphic designer with over 30 years of experience in the culture. I’m a proud Afro-Latino of Puerto Rican, African American, and Native American descent, and my heritage plays a big part in who I am, both as a man and as an artist.

I’ve been doing Hip-Hop since my early teenage years, and I gotta tell you, it’s been one hell of a journey. From recording in eight-track studios back in the day to working with some of the legendary names in underground Hip-Hop, I’ve always stayed true to myself and my love for the music. With nine solo albums and three mixtapes under my belt, including my latest project, Recetas, I’m still growing, still creating, and still finding new ways to express myself.

I’m just a regular guy with big dreams, a creative mind, and a whole lot of love for Hip-Hop culture. At the end of the day, I want to make good music, inspire people, represent my roots, and leave behind a legacy that people can appreciate long after I’m gone.

Struggle – What hardships have you gone through in life?

Man, where do I begin? I’ve definitely had my share of ups and downs in life, just like everybody else. I’ve dealt with personal struggles, health challenges, financial setbacks, disappointments, and situations where I’ve had to start all over again. Being an independent artist isn’t easy either, especially when you’re trying to make a name for yourself in an industry where talent alone doesn’t always open doors.

One of my biggest struggles has been learning how to keep pushing forward when things aren’t going the way I planned. I’ve had people doubt me, opportunities fall through, and moments where I questioned whether all the hard work was really paying off. On top of that, living with a disability and dealing with health issues has taught me that sometimes the biggest battles aren’t the ones people can see.

But here’s the thing about me: I’m stubborn when it comes to my dreams. (Laughs) I don’t give up that easily. I’ve learned that life isn’t always about how many times you fall down, but how many times you’re willing to get back up. Every disappointment, every setback, and every obstacle has taught me something about myself.

Music and art have always been my escape and my way of dealing with whatever life throws at me. When things get tough, I create. That’s my therapy. I take those experiences and turn them into something positive.

I’m 48 years old now, and if there’s one thing life has taught me, it’s that success doesn’t always happen on your schedule. Sometimes you’ve gotta take the long road to get where you’re supposed to be. I may not be where I ultimately want to be just yet, but when I look back at how far I’ve come, I’m proud of myself.

I’m still here, still creating, still dreaming, and still fighting for what I believe in. And as long as I’ve got breath in my body, I’m gonna keep climbing that mountain. No pun intended!

What do people usually not know about you?

Well, I think one thing that surprises people about me is that I’m a lot more than just a Hip-Hop artist. (Laughs) I’ve been a graphic designer, illustrator, 2D animator, and web designer for over 20 years. I actually have a bachelor’s degree in Visual Communications and Digital Design, along with an associate degree in Business Administration. So when people see my album covers, promotional graphics, websites, and other creative projects, what they may not realize is that a lot of that work comes directly from me.

Another thing people might not know is that I was born in Mount Holly, New Jersey, before growing up in the Washington, D.C. area. I’m also very proud of my Puerto Rican, African American, and Native American roots. My cultural background has influenced the way I see the world, my creativity, and especially my music.

Now, something else about me is that I’m actually a pretty down-to-earth guy. I love to laugh, joke around, and have a good time. I don’t take myself too seriously, even though I take my craft very seriously. I’m also a deep thinker. I spend a lot of time reflecting on life, studying different things, coming up with ideas, and thinking about what I want my legacy to be.

And believe it or not, despite being 6’5″ and having a name like Mic Mountain, I’m not some intimidating guy walking around trying to be larger than life. (Laughs) I’m just Michael. I love my family, I love being creative, and I appreciate the simple things in life.

I guess the biggest thing people don’t know about me is that behind the music and the personality is a man who’s still learning, still growing, and still trying to make those childhood dreams come true. Hip-Hop is a huge part of who I am, but it doesn’t define everything about me. I’m an artist in every sense of the word, and I’ve always believed that creativity shouldn’t have any limits.

What sets you apart from others?

Well, first off, I don’t really look at other artists as my competition. I look at them as fellow creators who are on their own journeys, just like me. Everybody has something different to bring to the table, and I respect that. But if you ask me what separates Mic Mountain from everybody else, I’d have to say it’s my originality, versatility, cultural background, and the fact that I’ve never been afraid to be myself.

I’ve been involved in Hip-Hop for over 30 years, and I’ve seen the culture go through a whole lot of changes. I’ve never felt the need to chase trends or change who I am just to fit in. I come from that golden era of Hip-Hop where lyricism, storytelling, originality, and having your own identity meant something. Those are the principles I still carry with me today.

Another thing that sets me apart is that I’m not just an emcee. I’m a producer, graphic designer, animator, and creative visionary. I can take an idea from my imagination and bring it to life through music, artwork, animation, or digital media. I love being involved in the entire creative process. My latest album, Recetas, is a perfect example of that. I took my Puerto Rican heritage, my love for traditional East Coast boom-bap, and my appreciation for food and culture, and turned it into a musical experience that represents who I am.

I also think my personality makes me different. I can be serious when I need to be, but I love humor, creativity, and having fun with what I do. I don’t believe Hip-Hop always has to be about looking tough or proving you’re harder than the next man. You can be lyrical, entertaining, intelligent, and still have a sense of humor. That’s something I’ve always appreciated about artists like Redman and Phife Dawg.

As far as life goes, I think what sets me apart is my determination. I’ve been through enough to know that nothing is guaranteed, but I refuse to let my circumstances determine how far I can go. I believe in treating people with respect, staying humble, and letting my work speak for itself.

At the end of the day, there’s only one Mic Mountain, just like there’s only one of everybody else. I’m not trying to be the next anybody. I’m trying to be the best version of myself and leave something meaningful behind.

Besides, with a name like Mountain, I’ve gotta stand tall, right?

What are your upcoming major events?

Well, right now, my biggest focus is promoting my latest album, Recetas, which was released on September 15, 2026, the first day of Hispanic Heritage Month. This project is very special to me because it’s a celebration of my Puerto Rican heritage, my love for Hip-Hop, and the culture that helped shape the man I am today.

Recetas is a 13-track album that blends traditional East Coast boom-bap Hip-Hop with Puerto Rican food, culture, humor, and storytelling. I’ve got some incredible artists featured on the project, including Thirstin Howl the 3rd, Powerule, La’Bori Dee, Duendy, and several others. The album is also dedicated to my late friend and fellow artist Paco Loco, who passed away earlier this year. Having him featured on the album makes this project even more meaningful to me.

One of the most unforgettable moments for me recently has been watching this album reach audiences around the world. I’ve received radio support from DJs and stations here in the United States and overseas, including the Netherlands, along with interviews, magazine features, and reviews from Hip-Hop publications. It’s a beautiful feeling knowing that something I created out of love for my culture is connecting with people from different backgrounds.

I’m also continuing to promote the music video for my single “Mofongo,” along with other songs from the album, including “Sancocho,” “Bacalaitos,” “Pineapple Pique,” and “Dulce De Leche.”

As far as what’s next, I’ve got more music in the works for 2027, including some exciting collaborations and projects that I’m looking forward to sharing when the time is right. I’m always creating something, whether it’s music, artwork, or another idea floating around in this big head of mine!

I’m not doing any live performances at the moment, but that doesn’t mean I’m sitting still. Right now, I’m concentrating on getting my music heard, expanding my audience internationally, connecting with more DJs and media outlets, and building the Mic Mountain brand.

For anybody who hasn’t heard Recetas yet, I definitely encourage you to check it out. You don’t have to be Puerto Rican to appreciate it. If you love authentic Hip-Hop, good beats, clever lyrics, and a little flavor, there’s something on that album for you.

You can keep up with my music, videos, merchandise, and everything else I’ve got going on at micmountain.com.

And believe me, at 48 years old, I’m nowhere near finished. I’ve still got a whole lot of music left in me. The Mountain is still climbing!

What expert advice would you like to give?

My biggest advice to anybody, whether you’re an artist, entrepreneur, or just somebody chasing a dream, is to go against the grain, create your own wave, and dare to be original! Don’t spend your life trying to be the next somebody else when you have the opportunity to be the first YOU!

One thing I’ve learned from being involved in Hip-Hop for over 30 years is that trends come and go, but originality never goes out of style. Too many people spend their time watching what everybody else is doing and trying to duplicate their success. But here’s the thing: if you’re always following somebody else’s wave, how are you ever going to discover what makes you special?

I’ve always believed that the greatest artists and innovators are the ones who aren’t afraid to be different. Think about it. Some of the most influential people in music, art, and business became successful because they challenged what everybody else thought was normal. They didn’t wait for permission to be themselves. They created something that people didn’t even know they wanted until they experienced it!

And let me tell you something else. Don’t let social media numbers, popularity, or somebody else’s definition of success determine your worth. Just because something is popular doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good, and just because something isn’t popular yet doesn’t mean it isn’t great. Sometimes you’re simply ahead of your time.

Be patient with yourself, study your craft, stay consistent, and never stop learning. Surround yourself with people who genuinely believe in you, but also learn to believe in yourself when nobody else does. You’re going to make mistakes, you’re going to face rejection, and there will be times when you question everything. That’s part of the journey. Just don’t allow those moments to make you abandon who you are.

And one more thing: don’t confuse being different with being original. Being different just to get attention is easy. Being original means having the courage to express something that’s genuinely yours.

At the end of the day, I’d rather be respected for being authentically Mic Mountain than celebrated for being a copy of somebody else.

So my advice is simple: Stop chasing waves. Make your own! And if people don’t understand your vision right away, that’s okay. Keep building it. Eventually, the right people will catch on.

Besides, why follow the crowd when you were born to stand out? (Laughs)
