OMEN44, whose name draws inspiration from Mark Twain’s novel No. 44, The Mysterious Stranger, is an Asian American hip-hop artist whose journey reflects resilience, cultural identity, and a deep connection to the music scene in Japan and the United States. After spending his teenage years in Japan and returning to the U.S. in his late teens and early twenties, he navigated language barriers, financial struggles, and the challenges of establishing himself as an Asian American artist in hip-hop. Through DJ parties, collaborations with influential artists such as Craig G and Large Professor, and his work promoting emerging New York talent in Japan, OMEN44 built a career shaped by determination and cross-cultural connections. Today, he embraces a lyrical style that finds depth in simplicity, remaining committed to authenticity and encouraging others to be true to themselves.
Here is the Q&A session we had with OMEN44.
OMEN44 As Cover Story Interview – October 2026 Magazine Edition
How do you introduce yourself?
OMEN44, I took the name from a novel by Mark Twain “No. 44, The Mysterious Stranger” and OMEN wich stands for “Phenomenon, event, or sign believed to foretell a future event, good or bad” and also at the beggining of my career I was wearing a mask and in Japan “Omen” meant mask.
Struggle – What hardships have you gone through in life?
I have spended my teen in Japan and came back to the state’s in my late teen early 20’s, moving around from Austin, TX to NY, catching up with English, working at Japanese restaurants, as a Asian American. My only tie to the Hip-Hop was through my Asian Dj’s, so through Dj parties I will later on get connected with Craig G, Large Professor and organize parties myself, and as a struggling artist myself I would frequently bring out artists to Japan for my side hustle to make ends meet, and push young New York artists too.
As a Asian in the U.S. you do realise what kind of minority you are, so when I was able to collaborate with a big name NIPPS(Buddha Brand) in Japan, I was amazed by the support and sales and responses you get.
We Asians do not get any shine out here in the state’s so without Japan there was no way I would of been able to make it this far.
What do people usually not know about you?
My lyricism with simple words, I use to use difficult words to show off my intellect. But I was able to bring depth with simplicity.
