Brian Herskowitz As Cover Story Interview – August 2024 Edition

How do you introduce yourself?

I am a filmmaker, writer, producer, director, and educator. I teach screenwriting and film finance at Boston University in Los Angeles. Additionally, I am an avid judo and Brazilian jujitsu practitioner and teach judo.

How was your Childhood to Adulthood transition?

I fell in love with acting at age 9 and started taking lessons in my hometown of Houston. I began practicing judo at age 6 and developed self-confidence. I did theater throughout high school and, at 17, graduated and went to Japan to train in judo. This was an extremely formative time in my life, with brutally hard training and many adventures.

What hardships did you face in your life?

At age 9, I had severely flat feet, which led to a radical surgery that grafted bones from my shin into my ankles. I spent almost a year in a wheelchair, and the surgery caused one foot to be stunted and the ankle unable to point straight. It also stimulated the growth of the shin bone, throwing my spine out of alignment. Despite this, I was determined to pursue my passions. I was a state judo champion at age 8 and, after the surgery, it took 5 years to become competitive again. This led me to Japan at 17. I also landed my first paid acting gig at 11 years old.

What do people usually not know about you?

Most people don’t know that I am a judo competitor or that I can converse in Japanese.

What sets you apart from your competitors in the industry and in life?

I treat everyone with respect, from production assistants to stars. I am passionate about taking care of investors, focusing on ensuring a profit through a well-thought-out marketing plan and quality work.

What are your upcoming major events – Unforgettable Moments or products/services that you want to promote/inform?

I will be directing a feature film I wrote later this year or early next. I am working to adapt my novel Conceptus into a movie and consulting on the independent TV series Future News Now. I won the World’s IJF Veteran’s Judo Championship in 2016 and will compete again in November. I was recently honored with my sixth-degree black belt in judo.

What are your food preferences and physical attributes?

I became a vegan about 5 years ago, which has improved my health and benefits animals and the environment.

Your love life, relationships and family?

My family is amazing. My sister created a nonprofit teaching kids about nutrition, and my older brother was a better judo competitor. My 91-year-old father is a best-selling author with over 60 books. My eldest daughter, Maggie, is an actress, writer, and animal welfare scientist. My youngest, Bailey, is an exceptional actress and part of the sketch comedy group NOPE, THAT’S A TOE. My wife, Gina, is a successful actress who appeared on Mork and Mindy and the FXX hit DAVE.

What expert advice would you like to give?

Be a lifelong learner, embrace difficulty, and listen when asking questions. Once you’ve gained a skill, put it into practice. If you’re an actor, act; if you’re a writer, write; if you’re a producer, produce. Talent can be nurtured, but not in a vacuum or based solely on knowledge or theory. Create, imagine, and, most importantly, DO.
