Kathleen Hema As Cover Story Interview – April 2025 Magazine Edition
How do you introduce yourself?
I’m Kathleen Hema, and I’ve been a sex education teacher for over 15 years. I used to teach sex ed in schools, but now I work online, teaching parents how to answer their kids’ sex questions. Many parents don’t know what to say when their 4-year-old asks, “Where do babies come from?” or their 8-year-old asks, “What’s sex?” I teach parents how to easily answer sex questions through my simple formula, which focuses on providing medically accurate and age-appropriate information.
What hardships have you gone through in life?
I started teaching parents how to have age-appropriate sex talks on social media in 2020, and it’s taken a long time to gain a following due to the censorship of this topic. Most recently, YouTube demonetized my channel, stating that my “talking-head style” of educational content was “sexually gratifying.” Up until that point, I had been monetized for nearly three years. There was no warning or explanation – just a complete removal of all my YouTube income. Luckily, my appeal was successful, and I was reinstated into the YouTube Partner Program, but it’s not often the case for sex ed channels.
What do people usually not know about you?
I share a lot about myself in my Instagram stories, but something most folks may not know is that I originally started my career in the PR and news broadcast world. I thought I was going to become a local news anchor. It wasn’t until I got my Master’s degree in public health that I shifted my focus to school-based sexual health education. I truly believe that everything happens for a reason. Making YouTube and TikTok videos actually suits me well, as I get to feel like I’m in the editing booth for a quick news segment, but I get to talk about something I believe in.
What sets you apart from your competitors in the industry and in life?
I don’t believe that I have competitors because anyone who goes into the sex ed field is truly passionate about helping others. Putting yourself online opens you up to being judged, and there are plenty of unkind comments. With that being said, I have always approached life assuming good intent. So, when I receive a comment that seems unkind or misinformed, the teacher in me will assume they’re commenting because they’re unaware, and I will aim to educate. Of course, there are some folks who troll, but the vast majority of my followers are truly trying to learn because they want to be able to answer their kid’s sex questions.
What are your upcoming major events or products/services that you want to promote/inform?
When a parent finds me, they’re usually searching for “how do I explain sex to my 9-year-old?” This means they’re trying to find the words to say while also wanting to avoid saying too much. They just want to know exactly what to say and how to say it. Top Talks was created for this parent. As a mom myself, I know what it’s like to have your kid ask you this question and feel the pressure to say it perfectly. I know parents are looking for the scripts to say when their kid asks, “Where do babies come from?” or “What’s sex?” I want parents to have simple and age-appropriate talks about reproduction, sex, puberty, masturbation, online safety, and porn. There’s more information about my harm reduction approach to sex talks on my website.
What expert advice would you like to give?
I want parents to know that you don’t need to know everything about sex and sexuality to become your kid’s go-to person when they have a question. I’ll teach you how to age-appropriately answer your kids’ sex questions as well as learn how to layer that answer with more information as they get older. I’m here to give you the confidence boost you’re looking for. If you don’t feel confident right now explaining what sex is, then this is your sign to start getting yourself prepared. Because your kid absolutely has questions about sex and sexuality. If they’re not asking you those questions, they might be asking their sex ed teacher, or they might be searching elsewhere for the answers.
