How do you introduce yourself?
Hi, my name is Michelle Rivera, and I am a singer, performer, content creator, and former Emmy Winning T, V. Host.
Struggle – What hardships have you gone through in life?
The most difficult struggle that I have gone through in my life has been trying to find my identity again after 17 years of marriage and then divorce. Like many women, once you become a wife and mother, it’s very easy to get lost in the importance of those roles and then eventually lose who you are as an individual. At the end of my marriage, I began to realize that much of my anxiety and depression that I was going through had to do with the fact that I had stopped doing many of my own passions, in particular singing. Singing was all I really knew my entire life, and I spent most of my 20s singing, writing, performing, and recording music. Then that all stopped once I became a wife and mother. It was nobody’s fault, but my own. I should have never given up doing my music, but I did, and so after my divorce, I have tried to reconnect with my first love again, which is singing and performing.
What do people usually not know about you?
Many people don’t know that in my 20s, I was almost signed to 3 major record labels. All of them fell through for various business reasons, but the fact that I was so close several times, just shows how much singing and the music industry truly dominated my life back then.
What sets you apart from others?
I believe what sets me apart from others is my resilience. My tolerance under stress and pressure are quite high. When I was doing my hybrid program for teaching, I was in a full-time university program getting my California Teaching Credential and Master’s Degree at the same time, while also working a full-time job, raising two children, and going through a divorce. And despite all of that, I graduated from that program with straight A’s.
What are your upcoming major events?
I’m in the rebuilding phase of my singing career and have been looking for musicians to collaborate with again. Once that is all in place, then I hope to line up some shows at that point. I’m also currently hitting the audition circuit again for musical theatre, so hoping to book something soon.
What expert advice would you like to give?
My biggest advice is to NEVER give up on your dreams, even when it feels exhausting or difficult. Also, it’s never too late to start again.
