Mike is a multifaceted professional whose life and career span filmmaking, financial planning, science, wildlife photography, art, and a remarkable range of creative pursuits. With a Ph.D. in Biology and a lifelong curiosity that has led him to explore everything from geology and gemstone cutting to filmmaking and field-guide illustration, he approaches life with a simple philosophy: never stop learning and always ask, “Why not?” Currently developing new film projects, Mike continues to embrace the creative process while drawing on the perseverance and tenacity that have shaped his success. His advice is equally straightforward and powerful—recognize opportunities, never give up, and remain a lifelong student in every field you pursue.
Here is the Q&A session we had with Michael Tove.
Michael Tove As Cover Story Interview – August 2026 Magazine Edition
How do you introduce yourself?
Nothing formal. I’m just “Mike.”
Struggle – What hardships have you gone through in life?
I wouldn’t say my life has been a matter of hardships. I did have to work long and hard – with high tenacity to achieve some of the things I have but in the end, it comes down to a favorite quote from “A League of Their Own.” “It’s supposed to be hard. If it wasn’t hard everyone would do it. The hard is what makes it great.”
What do people usually not know about you?
Most people are surprised at the wide diversity of things I’ve done – and do. Apart from filmmaking, I’m a professional financial planner, with a Ph.D. in Biology, and an undergraduate degree in Geology. My hobbies include birding, shell collecting, etc. I’ve been a lapidary (cut gemstones), a collector of – and maker (flintknapper) of Indian Artifacts. I played soccer in college, did a stint in figure skating. I’m a wildlife photographer, a painter (published a field guide to birds & whales – dis all the artwork), and so forth. I have friends who know these things and are continually amazed but for me, it’s nothing extraordinary. I just do all those things because I enjoy them and I never think “why not?”
What sets you apart from others?
I really don’t have “competitors” in life. In my professional (financial planning) industry, I pride myself on being a perpetual student of the industry – advanced training and certifications, etc. In the film world, I seek every possible opportunity to advance and promote. On a moment-by-moment basis, at times it seems as though it’s a continual uphill battle, but in retrospect, I seem to have had a lot of success. Not as much as some, but more than others – and in the end, comparing myself to someone else is meaningless so why waste the effort?
What are your upcoming major events?
In the film world, I presently have a shortin production and a feature in late stage development/early pre-production. I simply love being around the creative process – and in particular, love being on a set (especially mine). And I love being around my friends in the film world.
What expert advice would you like to give?
Three things:
1) Recognize that Life is filled with Once-in-a-Lifetime opportunities. Going through life with your head down, they will come and go in a fleeting moment and are lost forever. remain vigilant for opportunities and when they arise, act. Most will not pan out, but the ones that do, can be life-changing.
2) Never, ever give up. Success does not come easily – nor should it (that “Hard” thing again). ANd it can take a L O N G time to come. Blind persistence, perseverance, and tenacity is the only path to get there. Trying guarantees nothing but failing to try guarantees failure.
3) Become a student of the industry. Never stop learning and never settle for the “lowest common denominator” of learning. Actively seek advanced level training and remember, being the smartest person in the room means you’re in the wrong room.
