How do you introduce yourself?
We are Matteo Perico and Domenico Colella, scenographers/production designers. We work in cinema, theater, and events, creating places for stories, and in the stories we always seek a place to stay. We handle complete scenic design: from the visual idea to realization, collaborating with directors, productions, and festivals. Our work has been recognized with several national and international awards, and our projects have been presented in cinemas, festivals, and streaming platforms.
For us, scenography is a way to shape imagination and make space a living part of the narrative. For years we have crossed the boundaries between light and matter. We design spaces that breathe, places that do not exist until a story calls them. Our work is born from listening: to characters, to silences, to objects waiting to become symbols. Scenography for us is an act of care: a fragile balance between vision and reality, between dream and discipline. We like to think that every set has a soul, that every scene is a small world to be brought out with respect, with that artisanal wonder that belongs to those who still believe that poetry can take shape, wood, fabric, and colors.
Struggle – What hardships have you gone through in life?
Difficulties have forged us more than any award. We have gone through periods of silence, when no one called and it seemed our work no longer had a place to exist. We have worked at night, in cold spaces, under unforgiving lights, building worlds while inside us everything seemed to collapse. Sometimes fatigue guided us, other times doubt, that shadow that asks if you will really make it. But each time, right at the most fragile point, an idea arrived, a spark, something that reminded us why we do this job: because in the chaos of other people’s lives we seek a form, a light, a meaning. We have fought, yes. And we continue to do so. But it is in that struggle that we have found our voice.
What do people usually not know about you?
They don’t know that we are collectors of details: a light falling just right, a creaking door, a color found by chance in a market… Small things that become universes in our sets. They don’t know that we are shy, that sometimes we speak through scenography because words are not enough. They don’t know that we always carry a notebook full of ideas that are too strange, too big, or too fragile to be spoken aloud. They don’t imagine that, behind the scenes, we are two men who collect fragments of the world and reassemble them like frames, hoping that when the director says “action,” someone will be able to see what we have seen.
What sets you apart from others?
What sets us apart is listening: we transform invisible details into whole worlds. We do not just build scenery, but atmospheres that remain, places that breathe like the characters that inhabit them.
What are your upcoming major events?
The release of the film “MIOPIA Le Identità Nascoste,” a film produced in collaboration with RaiCinema and Marche Film Commission, directed by Rocco Mortelliti.
What expert advice would you like to give?
Our advice, the one that truly comes from experience, is not to be afraid of emptiness. Every project starts from there: from a white space, from an absence that seems intimidating. But it is precisely in that emptiness that vision finds its form. And above all protect the details. They are what make a world credible, they are what stay in the viewer’s heart much more than grand constructions. Scenography is not just construction, it is sensitivity. And sensitivity, like art, is defended every day: with honesty, with care, and with the courage to never stop imagining.
