Chitranjali Negi As Cover Story Interview – August 2024 Edition

How do you introduce yourself?

Hi, I am Chitranjali Negi—a passionate lawyer, acclaimed author, and dedicated researcher. As a prominent figure in the legal world, I have served at the Supreme Court of India for 15 years, holding a Master’s in Law with a specialization in Constitutional and Administrative Law. I advocate for diversity in international arbitration and serve as the Secretary of KMS Trust, leading initiatives in human rights and legal reform. My career is a blend of legal expertise and impactful writing, reflected in numerous internationally published research papers and law books. Beyond the courtroom, I am deeply involved in global arbitration and mediation, contributing to international organizations and driving social causes with unwavering commitment.

How was your Childhood to Adulthood transition?

Far from ordinary, my transition from childhood to adulthood was shaped by profound challenges. Growing up in Uttarakhand, I initially experienced a warm and stable childhood. However, at the age of sixteen, the sudden loss of my father altered my world dramatically. This loss thrust me into a realm of responsibility and struggle, causing me to mature far beyond my years while my peers enjoyed their teenage years.

The emotional turmoil and significant obstacles in pursuing my education were daunting. Yet, these difficulties became a powerful driving force. The steadfast support and guidance from my mentor, Shri Bimal, were instrumental in navigating this turbulent period. His encouragement and life lessons inspired me to persevere, embrace self-discipline, and channel my experiences into a fervent dedication to human rights and law. This challenging journey not only fortified my resolve but also fueled my commitment to justice and legal reform, shaping my career and values.

What hardships did you face in your life?

I faced significant hardships, particularly in my struggle for education. After the loss of my father in my teens, who was a journalist, I was confronted with the challenge of continuing my studies without his support. His passing intensified my determination to achieve educational success and become independent, which became my primary motivation in life.

Education, for me, was not just a path to personal growth but a beacon of hope and resilience. It represented the chance to honor my father’s legacy and transform adversity into achievement. The motivation to succeed academically was so powerful that it overshadowed the daily struggles I faced. This drive to become something meaningful in life fueled my unwavering resolve to overcome difficulties. Despite the obstacles, my belief in the transformative power of education kept me focused on creating a future of my own and making a meaningful impact. Even now, after 15 years in my law profession, I continue to embrace learning and growth, driven by the same passion that guided me through my formative years.

What do people usually not know about you?

Many people might not know that I have a deep spiritual side that significantly influences my personal and professional life. Additionally, I am a passionate cat lover and manage Meow Farm, a sanctuary for cats in Uttarakhand dedicated to the care and well-being of cats. Beyond my professional commitments, I enjoy traveling and exploring the world, constantly seeking new experiences and perspectives that enrich my life both personally and professionally.

What sets you apart from your competitors in the industry and in life?

What sets me apart from my competitors both in my industry and in life is my unique approach to personal and professional growth. Unlike those who are driven by the rat race, I find deep fulfillment in solitude and the tranquility of nature. Living near the woods provides me with a profound sense of peace, which fuels my creativity and introspection.

I am both an introvert and an extrovert, embracing the balance between solitude and social interaction. I see myself as my own competitor, constantly seeking to learn and explore rather than follow trends. I pursue what truly resonates with me, rather than what others are doing.

As I always say, “True success lies not in following others, but in finding the courage to forge your own path.” This philosophy drives me to continually innovate, research new trends, and remain true to my passions.

What are your upcoming major events – Unforgettable Moments or products/services that you want to promote/inform?

I am currently working on several new international research papers and writing a new law book, both of which will contribute to my ongoing exploration of critical legal issues. Additionally, I have received invitations to collaborate, attend arbitration workshops, and participate in conferences in international locations such as Singapore, Hong Kong, South Africa, and Germany. These opportunities will further enhance my global engagement and professional development.

I aim to promote legal awareness and highlight the profound impact that the legal profession can have on society. A lawyer’s role extends far beyond courtroom battles; it involves serving as a trusted advisor across various sectors. I advocate for enhancing legal ethics among lawyers, advocates, and courts to ensure the highest standards of service and integrity. By fostering a deeper understanding of legal principles and ethical practices, we can drive meaningful change and uphold justice effectively across all facets of society.

Unforgettable moments in my career include graduating law in first rank, marking a significant milestone in my academic journey. Another pivotal moment was becoming a lawyer at the Supreme Court of India, where I began my practice under the esteemed mentorship of Justice Fakruddin. My first visit to The Hague, Netherlands, where I had the honor of meeting Hon. Lady Justice Joyce, First Vice-President of the International Criminal Court, was an inspiring experience. Additionally, delivering a keynote speech at the ODR conference in Beijing, China, stands out as a proud achievement in my professional journey.

What are your food preferences and physical attributes?

I have a preference for vegetarian food and have enjoyed exploring various cuisines from around the world, including Italy, France, the Netherlands, Finland, China, and Hong Kong. I particularly enjoy different types of salads, grilled vegetables, and an array of breads and croissants. In India, I appreciate both South Indian and North Indian dishes. I also have a fondness for fruits and fresh juices.

Your love life, relationships and family?

My life is an open book, shared with my family of three members and my six beloved cats, who bring immense joy, peace of mind, and balance. I believe in embracing authenticity, both in reality and on social platforms, steering clear of pretense to remain true to myself. My unique and deeply supportive relationship with my mentor, who is also my best friend, helps foster a harmonious family life. I share my personal, professional, and spiritual journey with him and find profound fulfillment surrounded by a few close friends and many well-wishers.

What expert advice would you like to give?

While I don’t believe in offering one-size-fits-all advice, as each person’s journey is unique with its own stories, goals, and circumstances, I encourage you to remain true to yourself. Be your own guide and mentor.

As I always say, “Be true to yourself, create your own path, and never stop learning. Life offers no free rides—each experience shapes your journey.”
