Today, as a mentor, entrepreneur, and founder of the Muggsy Bogues Family Foundation, he is dedicated to empowering underserved communities and inspiring others through speaking engagements, youth programmes, and charitable initiatives. His journey stands as a powerful reminder that success is shaped not by limitations, but by the courage to believe in yourself and persevere.

How do you introduce yourself?

I’m Muggsy Bogues, a former NBA point guard and current mentor, entrepreneur and an individual who holds the belief that heart and determination matter more than any circumstance.

Struggle – What hardships have you gone through in life?

While many people may know me as the shortest player in NBA history, I faced adversity at an early age growing up in Baltimore. Growing up there was violence, drugs and poverty around every corner. Basketball became my safe haven away from all of that, despite everyone who doubted me because of my height. Instead of looking around and becoming a part of my environment, I chose to use those adversities to overcome and motivate me through every obstacle I encountered.

What do people usually not know about you?

Many people believe the rumor that Michael Jordan called me a “little person” and while the story has taken on a life of its own over the years, what people don’t know is that Michael has consistently shown me respect throughout the years. In fact he has even called me one of the toughest defenders he ever faced. It’s a nice reminder that reputation is not built on size or talent but on dedication, heart, work ethic, and the respect you earn from your peers.

What sets you apart from others?

I think something that sets me apart from competitors in the industry or in life is that I don’t view success as competing against each other because I was already a step behind. I became very aware early on that I was viewed as having a disadvantage compared to other players because of my height. This set me apart from others because I had to be resilient with what I had and be consistent in who I am as a person. While talent has helped me open doors, my character and heart has helped me create lasting success, not just for myself but for others.

What are your upcoming major events?

Today, my focus is on staying connected to the game and using my platform to inspire others. You can find me through speaking engagements, community initiatives, media projects, or youth camps. I’m passionate about sharing the lessons basketball has taught me and applying them to life beyond the game in order to help others.

One of the ways I enjoy doing that is through the Muggsy Bogues Family Foundation. The nonprofit brings people together with a shared purpose while simultaneously providing resources, opportunities, and support to underserved communities. Contributing to the impact I wish had been available to my childhood community growing up.

In addition, I am looking forward to my annual Muggsy Bogues Celebrity Weekend, taking place September 19-21. The event will feature a welcome reception, charity golf tournament, and a gala to support the mission. Just before the event, on September 18, I’ll be deeply honored to be recognized as the Urban League’s Person of the Year. An acknowledgement means a great deal to me because it showcases the importance of giving back and serving others.

What expert advice would you like to give?

The best advice I can give someone is to never allow someone else’s opinion to become your reality. The greatest advantage in your life is your mindset no matter; not what background you come from, or the circumstance you are currently standing in, your mindset can make or break what you do in this life. You’d be surprised how much is possible, if you believe it is possible.
