Here is the Q&A session we had with Julia Thomsen.
Julia Thomsen As Cover Story Interview – July 2026 Magazine Edition
How do you introduce yourself?
Hello, I’m Julia Thomsen, a composer based in London. I write piano led, calming music, the kind of thing people put on when they need a moment of stillness in an otherwise loud day. My work has now passed 20 million streams on Spotify, but for me it was never about the numbers. It’s about giving people something small and available that supports how they feel.
Struggle, what hardships have you gone through in life?
Honestly, one of the biggest struggles has been learning to step away from my own work. When I’m deep into writing a piece, it’s easy to lose hours without realising it, I get so locked into the detail that I forget the thing that actually helps most is stepping back. Taking even a few minutes away frees the mind and opens things up again, it’s often where the best ideas come from, not from pushing harder but from giving myself permission to pause.
What do people usually not know about you?
A lot of the press talks about me as a London composer, and I understand why, that’s where I’ve lived and built my career for a while now. But I’m actually from Scotland originally, I grew up there and my family still live there. London is home now, but Scotland is where I’m from, and I think that root still shows up in the music somewhere, even if people don’t always know to look for it.
What sets you apart from others?
I don’t really think about it as competition. Providing listeners with something to enjoy is what I care most about, and that’s the lens everything goes through. My goal is pretty straight forward, it is to continue writing pieces that helps someone regulate, settle, or process what they’re feeling.
What are your upcoming major events?
Right now the focus is getting more people to actually experience the music properly, not as background noise but as something you sit with. That’s why we always say, turn the volume down to a gentle whisper and just listen. Breathe. Listen. Unwind.
What expert advice would you like to give?
Start small. You don’t need an hour of meditation or a big lifestyle overhaul to feel more regulated, sometimes it’s three minutes of quiet and the right piece of music. Emotional wellbeing isn’t separate from daily life, it’s tied into the nervous system, so the tools that help don’t need to be complicated. Find the small thing that settles you and use it often.
