Uncle Ryano As Cover Story – November 2023 Edition

Please share your background.

I grew up in Tyler TX primarily, though my family moved quite a bit when I was young due to my step father’s job. I started playing music at 16/17 years old, played harmonica in an R&B band at 17, and had my own band by 19. Played the Texas bar circuit, along with several nightclubs in Oklahoma and Louisiana. I moved to Nashville at age 22 in Feb 1993. I had several publishing deals and record deals between 1995- 2000, with several songs released in hit television shows and movies. In 1997, I co-wrote and performed the title track “Cowboy Up” on the 1st PRCA (Pro Rodeo Cowboy Association) album. With artists such as Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash.

In 2002, I won the SOCAN song of the year, with Lisa Brokops “I’d Like To See You Try”, nominated again in 2003 for Lisa Brokop’s “Whiskey and Wine”, nominated again in 2004 for video if the year with Gil Grand’s rendition of my song “Run”.

2003- Cowboy Up was adopted as the rally song for the Boston Redsox, as the finally broke the 86 year long “Curse of the Bambino”. Also in 2003, I wrote, produced and released the album “The Sound of Fenway”, as a “Ryano size” thank you, to the amazing people of New England who had honored and humbled me so much.

2004-2008 Formed the revolutionary underground band, “Abel Kane”. Opened for the biggest names in rock and country. Whenever we played a show in Nashville, the crowds were often packed with music and celebs.I walked away from everything in 2008 after mounting personal losses in my family. Everyone thought I was crazy, but I needed to answer some “meaning of life questions” during this time in my life.

In 2010, my greatest gift was given to my wife and I, with the birth of our amazing daughter. She is our joy and our world.

In April of 2023, with urging from my wife and daughter, and similar pushes from music industry friends, I stepped back out from retirement with not one, but (2) 12 song albums. “Voices in My Head”, and “New West”. I founded the new label  “Bottle Rocket Records LLC”

Childhood to Adulthood – How was your transition from childhood to adulthood and what are the bad and good things you remember?

I moved to live with my grandparents at age 13. My desire was to start and finish the same high-school, and due to my stepfather’s job, we had to move a lot. Tyler, TX a nd my family , was one thing that was always a constant. They were always there, when everything in my life was constantly changing as a child. The only roots I had were there. Living with my grandparents, I worked constantly on the family farm. You learn alot about life and hard work on a farm. There are no set hours. The only guarantee is, tomorrow there will be more work to do. I was given huge responsibilities, and was expected to be worthy of them. I grew up fast. Like most people, I look back and wish I had made more of different moments when I was younger. What I thought were tough times often turned out to be some of the best times of my life. I had an amazing childhood with great grandmother’s, great aunts and uncles, cousins everywhere. It was amazing, and I had no idea how lucky I was. The endless summers at the lake, riding horses in the rain, countless crazy shenanigans with my cousins. These are the memories I cherish to this day.

What hardships have you gone through in life?

2000-2014 The personal family losses were devastating. I had reached the age where life stops giving you things, and starts taking them away. 28 family and friends over a 14 year period, pushed me to the point of questioning the purpose of any of it. The loss of the old ones who built me, my youngest brother to a car crash, my mother to cancer at 59, a miscarriage on Mothers day, and my wife’s youngest sister’s death the day we buried my mother, was devastating.

I came back to where I began, and gave my life a total reboot. We scaled everything down and lived very simple. In 2010 we were given an incredible gift with the birth of our amazing daughter Emma.

Me, my wife, and our daughter lived a pretty average life. My wife and daughter had begun gently pushing me to write and compose once again , but the spark wasn’t there yet. A chance connection with Billy Ray Cyrus who’d requested some line changes on an old song of mine caused the creativity to reawaken and one of the replacement lines turned into its own song. A funny rocking tune called “Twerkin with a Twang”, restarted it all. In 2023 we released (2) 12 song albums “Voices in my Head” and “New West”, and 5 newly produced music videos, and a brand new record label

“BOTTLE ROCKET RECORDS LLC”

What do people usually not know about you?

Scared of pigs and hate Lima Beans! I don’t know why. Neither one has ever done anything mean to me, but I feel how I feel! Don’t judge me.

What sets you apart from your competitors in the industry and in life?

I honestly don’t see other artists as competitors. I can often feel that vibe coming my way from others sometimes, but it’s just not how my mind works. I want to see everyone do well, and will be the 1st one to celebrate others success. As far as what differentiates me from others I know, it’s simple. You are and always will be the “star of my show”, the person in my song. Everything I write is for you, everything I sing us for you. My honor is when my music can be a small part of the soundtrack behind  favorite memories of your life.

What are your upcoming major events – Unforgettable Moments or products/services that you want to promote/inform?

Continuing to write with amazing artists and producers, finish getting the Bottle Rocket Record Store up and going with cool merchandise. Several possible tours are in discussion, but it’s to early in the talks to say much more at this time

What are your food preferences and physical attributes?

Peaches, watermelon and Popeyes Chicken are my favs! Not at the same time though, that’d be weird 😕

Your love life, relationships and family?

My amazing wife Melissa whom I have known for 36 years, and we’ve been married for 24. I used to sing to her when I was 16 and she was 15 years old, and I’m still singing to her today. If she ever gets good taste in music, I’m screwed lol 😆

What expert advice would you like to give?

Slow down! If you have to chase it, it’s not worth having. When it’s right, it comes to you. What you do isn’t what makes you remarkable, the people who love you is what makes you special. When you care enough to think about someone, take the time to call them and tell them. Tell your parents you are “proud of them”. Tell them you are proud to be from them. It will be a gift to both of you.
