Sibel Chulliat As Exclusive Cover Story – June 2023

How do you introduce yourself?

Sibel Chulliat: I am a stage actress and director. I have been seeking the “truth” on the stage since my childhood. I strongly believe in the importance and the power of the theatre in the lives of individuals. I have performed in three continents. Europe, US. and the Middle East. I have been experiencing a wonderful stage-audience dialogue in my career. I had awards, but also I happened to be banned because of one of my most impactful work (Ben Anadolu / I am Anatolia, 2018) and I wrote a book about that (Kibar Kitap / Kind Book, 2019). I am also the writer of a university PhD thesis (Sorbonne Paris, 2016) and two memoires (Florida State University, 2003 and Sorbonne Paris, 2010).

Childhood to Adulthood – How was your transition from childhood to adulthood and what are the bad and good things you remember?

Sibel Chulliat: I’ve never cut my ties with my childhood indeed. Why I love theatre so much today is maybe because of this, I can be as free as a child on the stage. I think childhood is the most important period of my life. I started very early to think deeply about everything related to nature and human beings. A loving childhood is the capital ! I was happy in all conditions when I was a child, I embraced life as it was. Probably, the observation capacity that I need the most in my job comes from my childhood. Passage to adulthood from childhood was very smooth for me. It’s both because I was already very mature when I was a kid and also I feel still as authentic as a kid while I am a grown up.

Struggle – What hardships have you gone through in life?

Sibel Chulliat: Bureaucracy, extreme conservatism, corruption, misogyny, hypocrisy, mediocrity, nepotizm are some of the hardships I went through in my life. I had to fight regularly against these in my profession. I am so proud of myself for my ongoing battle with these archaic obstacles and barriers.

What do people usually not know about you?

Sibel Chulliat: People usually don’t know how funny I am in my private life.

What sets you apart from your competitors in the industry and in life?

Sibel Chulliat: I believe my personality distinguishes me both in my professional and personal lives. I never ever judge people, I always focus on their positive capacities, I have a huge capacity to understand and discuss, I am never tired of listening and producing solutions. In general I love people very much.

What are your upcoming major events – Unforgettable Moments or products/services that you want to promote/inform?

Sibel Chulliat: In three continents I worked with very different actors, directors and students. I am very proud of my connection with every single one of them and our productivity. I believe in multicultural art. When I was a pretty experienced actress I decided to direct, it was quite an achievement, but when I started to write I really appreciated myself, I felt seriously satisfied.

What are your food preferences and body measurements?

Sibel Chulliat: I love vegetables a lot, but I don’t say no to meat. My appetite is pretty developed, I appreciate all sorts of food. I have always been sportif, I care about my body and I love what I have.

Your family and relationships?

Sibel Chulliat: Family is one of the most important things in life for me. Especially during childhood all family members are immensely remarkables. We are the products of our families or the absence of our families. I was a lucky one, I was born in a very caring family. The family that I founded is as important as the one that I was born in of course. I am a very constructive person, I would do anything possible for the good of my family.

What expert advice would you like to give?

Sibel Chulliat: My best advice would be to insist not to lose the authenticity. Every person is unique and terribly important. Every single life counts. Our authenticity is a tool to create meaningful bounds and environments. Self esteem is priceless.
