Diana Makieva As Cover Story Interview – September 2023

Please share your background

I’m an independent journalist from Russia. I worked as a tv host on “MTV ” Russia, as an editor in another tv channel and as a journalist in Ukraine. I wrote articles against Putin. Maybe I chose a very complex road, that’s why I’m giving this interview to you.

How was your transition from childhood to adulthood and what are the bad and good things you remember?

I was born in small Russian city – Vladikavkaz. It’s very poor city ( like an all small city from Russia). When I was 7 years, my family moved to Moscow. We didn’t live richly. When I was 10 years Putin became a president. I remember election day. My mom and I voted. Mom wrote on the election ballot the name of “Putin” and I asked: “Why Putin?”, she answered: “I don’t know, but TV tells me that he is a good politician!” Life showed she was wrong!

What hardships have you gone through in life?

As I mentioned, I worked at “MTV” Russia, but I was fired, because when you don’t support Putin, it means – career ender. Then “MTV” showed the TV program with my criticism of Putin and Putin closed “MTV”. I wrote articles against Putin and survived terrible information war against me, two suicide, psychiatric hospital( where doctors abused me), repression from “FSB” Russian security service and death threats. They wanted to kill me, but something went wrong, so I fled Russia. Then, when I was in emigration detention (on the US border) my guarantor left me in prison. I loved him. Unbelievably, I learned to fight against the monstrous Russian system, but never learned to cope with the cynicism of men, which I love.

What do people usually not know about you?

I was shown as a monster! And sometimes people read and look at this propaganda and believe it.
It’s sad to understand that ordinary people believe it, but more painfully- understand that believe people, which you must know is – Russian propaganda:from journalists and specialists in politics. And now I know, you can explore in University – what is Russian propaganda, write about it in books and articles. But you don’t know anything about information warfare until you actually experience it as I did. I’m a very good and kind person. But, sometimes people want to believe propaganda more…it’s sad.

What sets you apart from your competitors in the industry and in life?

Russian propaganda abolished my reputation, so I constantly have been trying to prove to the world that I am capable of so much more. I’m a hardworker. I work 7 days a week. I learned English. I know I will get an American education and work in the US as a journalist. I want people to respect me. The worst thing for me is when people don’t respect me. And, yes, I have big ambitions.

What are your upcoming major events – Unforgettable Moments or products/services that you want to promote/inform?

Now my big plan is to tell my story to Americans. I want to draw the attention of the world and tell them how Putin represses people, who don’t support the war in Ukraine and his system. And yes, it may be amazing if some production company would be interested in making a movie about my story. Who knows the phone number of Quentin Tarantino? ha ha.

What are your food preferences and physical attributes?

I like delicious foods and drink examples are sea food: oysters with white wine, and caviar.

Your love life, relationships and family?

My family don’t support me, they support Putin. They never supported me. I don’t have a boyfriend. I work 7 days a week and just don’t have time for relationships. But I want to.freeze my eggs, because I don’t want to marry and have children in the coming 10-15 years. In Russia I ran into problems. It is because Russia is a patriarchal country. Russian women get married early. I’ve never understood Russians, they always thought that I’m strange. This is Russia! If you tell the truth, have big ambitions and independence, this fu**ing authoritarian system will destroy you!

What expert advice would you like to give?

You must fight, even if you are scared!
