Laurel Feierbach is an actress, wife, and mother who stepped away from her acting career for more than a decade to focus on building her family through adoption before returning to television and film four years ago. Reentering the industry in her mid-30s initially made her feel behind her peers, but life experience has given her greater confidence, perspective, and depth as an actress. She embraces the unique qualities that set her apart and encourages fellow actors to recognize and embrace their natural type rather than resist it. With her upcoming film The Militia, in which she portrays a mother caught between love and dangerous extremist beliefs, Feierbach continues to pursue meaningful roles while proving that dreams can be revisited and fulfilled at any stage of life.

How do you introduce yourself?
I’m Laurel Feierbach. I’m an actress. I’m also a wife and a mom of many through adoption. I started my journey as an actress when an LA talent agent/actress and her Broadway-veteran husband moved to my tiny California mountain town and started
teaching kids theatre and voice.
I went on to get a B.A. in Theatre Arts and spent a couple years pursuing an acting career before my husband and I felt a strong call to adopt. So I stepped away from my career for over a decade as we built and raised our family. Four years ago, I realized my
kids were older and had time to jump back in and pursue a tv/film career full-time!
Struggle – What hardships have you gone through in life?
After over a decade away from my career to focus on raising my family, I jumped back in at age 36. I’m so grateful I was able to have that time. And I’m so grateful to be back to pursuing this dream. And also sometimes I feel like I’m behind in this career! If I look to the right or the left I can see a lot of my peers running way ahead of me. I’ve had to get my mindset right and remind myself I’m not behind! Sometimes we do things in different orders and that’s ok. I was married at 21, a mom through international adoption at 23, and then a mom through foster care adoption multiple times over. I pursued those dreams and now I’m pursuing more dreams. I still want to be doing this when I’m 80 so I’ve got plenty of time! And in reality, the roles I’m getting at this stage of life are super interesting to me – I actually feel like I grew into my type in a way that I couldn’t at 21!
What do people usually not know about you?
Well, I’m 6 feet tall, which is super obvious if you see me in real life, but not so obvious if you don’t! Also, my husband is shorter than me (gasp!) and our family is transracial. All of that means we really stand out everywhere we go! God gave me a life where I’m very conspicuous when I really love being inconspicuous!
What sets you apart from others?
I think taking time away from my career and then returning in my mid 30s gave me a unique perspective on the whole thing. I’m fresh to the game, but I also have a lot more life wisdom than I had before. I can see that I’m a better actress than I was a decade
ago, simply because I’ve lived more life and those experiences shape my performances.
I’m also much more aware of who I am, my strengths, what I bring to the table, than I was in my 20s.
What are your upcoming major events?
My film, The Militia is coming out September 8! It’s an indie film, a gritty coming-of-age drama that tells the story of Daniel Pierce, who is growing up in a family that’s part of a local militia. I play his mom, Elinor Pierce. She was an interesting character to play. She is a loving wife and mom, but at the end of the day she also buys into some extreme beliefs and she raises her son to pursue her misguided ideals. In a male-centric world, she’s a unique presence, calming on one hand, dangerous on the other.
The Militia is a powerful cautionary tale of extremism and violence and the effects those things have on the next generation. The Militia is available for pre-order on Apple TV, and will also be on Amazon Prime and Google Play, and satellite services such as Dish Network, Sling TV, and DIRECTV. I’m excited for people to see this film and I think there’s a lot of relevancy to things going on in our world today.
What expert advice would you like to give?
I’ve learned to embrace my type as an actress! I tend to play women who are competent and in control, with a contained vulnerability burbling to the surface. That mostly gets me cast as boss ladies or family ladies, and I love it!
As actors, we love to be creative and to stretch and grow, so a lot of us fight against this idea of type casting. But when you look at how casting works, we all have a type that we most naturally fit into, and I say, “Embrace it!” Once you’ve hit it big, you can play outside of that type and people might give you a chance. But your type is actually a gift because it’s your most obvious, natural casting. I think if you can figure out what that is and go for it, that’s how you build a career.
