Karen Berger As Cover Story Interview – August 2026 Magazine Edition

How do you introduce yourself?

My name is Karen Berger. I am a Nicaraguan-American entrepreneur, cigar manufacturer, and the owner of Karen Berger Cigars and Estelí Cigars S.A. in Estelí, Nicaragua. I am also the owner of Don Kiki Cigar Superstore in Daytona Beach, Florida. But beyond titles, I introduce myself as a woman of faith, a mother, a dreamer, and someone who has spent many years building a life and a business around one of Nicaragua’s greatest traditions: tobacco.

My journey in the cigar industry is also deeply connected to the legacy of my late husband, Don Kiki Berger. Today, I am proud to continue that legacy while creating my own chapter through Karen Berger Cigars and representing Nicaraguan craftsmanship around the world.

Struggle – What hardships have you gone through in life?

Life has taught me that success and struggle often walk together. One of the most difficult moments of my life was losing my husband, Don Kiki, in 2014. I was left not only with tremendous personal grief, but also with the responsibility of continuing a business, protecting a legacy, raising my family, and finding my own identity as a businesswoman.

There have been many challenges since then—financial pressure, difficult business decisions, being a woman in a traditionally male-dominated industry, and learning to keep moving forward even during moments of uncertainty. I also lost my father in 2025 at 99 years old, which was another deeply emotional chapter in my life.

Through everything, my faith in God, my children, my family, and my determination have kept me going. I have learned that strength is not about never falling; it is about finding the courage and faith to rise again.

What do people usually not know about you?

People often see the businesswoman, the cigar brand, the events, the traveling, and the smile, but they don’t always see how involved I am behind the scenes. I am very hands-on. I can be discussing international distribution one moment and working directly with production, packaging, tobacco, customers, or my team the next.

I also carry my family and my roots very close to my heart. Despite everything I have accomplished, I still consider myself a simple woman from Nicaragua who believes deeply in hard work, family, gratitude, and faith.

What sets you apart from others?

Authenticity! I don’t simply put my name on a cigar. I am part of the process. Our cigars are manufactured at our factory in Estelí, Nicaragua, and I understand the work, people, tobacco, and passion behind every cigar we produce. For me, cigars are not simply products—they represent agriculture, craftsmanship, families, history, and Nicaragua.

I also believe my story sets me apart. I inherited a beautiful legacy, but I chose not to live only in the past. I have worked to honor Don Kiki’s legacy while building the Karen Berger name, developing new blends, expanding internationally, and creating my own footprint in this industry.

What are your upcoming major events?

2026 has been an exciting year for Karen Berger Cigars, with continued expansion in the United States and international markets. One of our major upcoming international events is InterTabac in Dortmund, Germany, in September 2026. I will also be participating in cigar events and visiting partners in Germany during that trip. We are continuing to expand Karen Berger Cigars into new international markets while developing new products and strengthening our presence throughout the United States.

Every new market and event is another opportunity for me to share not only my cigars, but also the craftsmanship and tobacco tradition of Estelí, Nicaragua.

What expert advice would you like to give?

Never allow fear to make your decisions for you. Business will test you. Life will test you even more. There will be moments when you lose money, people, opportunities, or even the plans you thought your future depended on. Learn from those moments, but don’t allow them to define you. Know your product, understand your numbers, respect the people who work with you, listen to your customers, and never stop learning.

Most importantly, believe in what you are building. Success rarely happens overnight. Sometimes it takes years of sacrifice before other people can see what you already saw in your heart. Stay humble, stay consistent, protect your reputation, and never forget where you came from.
