How do you introduce yourself?
My name is Madison Louise Austin. I’m a spiritual practitioner, occultist, and creator whose journey has been deeply shaped by Vodou, ancestral spirituality, and the mysteries surrounding life, death, and the crossroads. I’m also known through my spiritual identity, Dr. Mortis Noir. My work is about embracing the parts of spirituality that many people are afraid to look at—death, shadow, transformation, ancestry, and the power that comes from knowing yourself.
Struggle – What hardships have you gone through in life?
I’ve experienced periods of homelessness, financial hardship, family rejection, difficult relationships, employment struggles, and moments where I felt completely alone. I’ve also had my social-media accounts hacked and watched things I worked hard to build disappear overnight. But those experiences taught me resilience. I learned that sometimes you have to rebuild yourself before you can rebuild your life. What was meant to break me ultimately forced me to become stronger and more independent.
What do people usually not know about you?
People see the mystery, the spirituality, the confidence, and the darker aesthetic, but they don’t always see how sensitive and emotional I actually am. I’ve had to develop a very strong exterior because of what I’ve lived through. I’m also someone who studies deeply. I don’t want spirituality to simply be an aesthetic for me—I want to understand the traditions, symbolism, history, and responsibilities behind what I practice.
What sets you apart from others?
I think what sets me apart is that I never wanted to fit spirituality into a version that was comfortable for everyone else. My path has always been personal, intense, and unconventional. I’m not afraid of subjects like death, shadow work, ancestry, or the unknown. I also believe authenticity matters more than validation. I don’t need everyone to understand my path for me to know why it matters to me.
What are your upcoming major events?
I’m currently focusing on expanding my spiritual work, building my presence as Dr. Mortis Noir, creating more educational and artistic content, and continuing to develop projects connected to spirituality, occult symbolism, and my personal journey. I’m also interested in turning my experiences into something that can inspire people who have felt like outsiders or had to rebuild their lives from nothing.
What expert advice would you like to give?
Don’t let people pressure you into becoming someone you’re not. Study before you claim knowledge, respect the traditions you enter, and understand that spirituality comes with responsibility—not just aesthetics or titles. Most importantly, don’t build your identity around other people’s validation. Your life can change completely when you stop asking everyone else for permission to become who you are.
