Nicola Wright As Cover Story Interview – December 2025 Magazine Edition

How do you introduce yourself?

My name is Nicola Wright, I was born in London, where I still live and I am an actress. I knew from a very young age that acting was my passion and what I wanted to do, luckily I had support from my mother who had been an actress and therefore I had guidance in pursuing acting as a career. I went to the Italia Conti Stage School at the age of sixteen and by eighteen I was working in weekly repertory theatre and building up my weeks towards my full Equity card, which you received after completing forty week work. Acting was a very different world back then, nearly every job was a union contract and only Equity members could apply to get those roles, added to that our union was a ‘closed shop’, There was no Internet, or digital age, and independent filmmaking was not yet a possibility, so we were solely reliant on our agents to find us work. I was lucky I was working on television shows and in film from a young age and I have worked with some incredible directors and actors . Some have gone on to be household names and most like myself, have been ‘working actors’ making a living from a job we love doing. I am so grateful that over the years I have been able to work across the board in theatre, film television and radio and I am fortunate enough to have a job which I love.

Struggle – What hardships have you gone through in life?

I really don’t feel I can say I have gone through genuine hardship, especially compared to millions around the world who live in war torn countries, or under strict regimes where women don’t have the rights or respect that I have had. I have had family losses from quite a young age which of course hit me hard at the time, but I had support from my partner and friends during those losses, and although one never forgets, I believe you can learn to accept and live alongside the changes in your life when they come.I think since those early bereavements my outlook has tried to always stay thankful for good health and make the most of every day.

What do people usually not know about you?

My friends & family know most things about me, I am a fairly open book ! I was an only child so friends are very important to me in the absence of siblings. I have children and grandchildren of my own and my husband and I met when we were very young, he is not an actor and keeps me firmly in the ‘real world’! I also love to travel and explore new places, so if work mixes a trip away then that is a bonus!

What sets you apart from others?

I am probably not the one to answer that ! We are all unique with our own talents and life experiences which means we all have the potential to stand apart ! I guess I have been able to mix both a career in the mainstream world and in the last fifteen years or so, been able to mix that with working for independent production companies making some different genre films which perhaps I hadn’t done before . Certainly my venture into the horror world as an actress is thanks to independent films. I would like to think that my many decades of experience sets me apart from some!

What are your upcoming major events ?

In the past few months I have worked on Bergerac (U ) a big American studio film (NDA) and four independent feature films, (two horror’s, a thriller and a rom-com ). One is a reworking of, Wuthering Heights, in which I played Nelly. I also have two films pencilled for early next year .What I have always thrived on is the unpredictability, no two days are the same, so I look forward to seeing what the New Year might bring !

What expert advice would you like to give?

Work hard at developing your skills as an actor, and if you haven’t had formal training, join some short courses or classes . Watch movies, go to the theatre if you can, know and understand your business and those in it . Try not to take rejection personally, being an actor means endless rejection but every audition or every new person you meet can potentially remember you for another time. Being an actor is a job so treat it as such, most new actors these days will need to supplement their income with another source of income, so try and find something flexible, so you can be ready and available when a job or casting comes along. Networking has become increasingly important especially in the independent world, so look out for events where you can expand your network, Finally, always be on time, treat people with the respect you would want for yourself, be pleasant to work with and arrive on set prepared, lines learnt and ready to do your job!
