Viktoriia Vasalatii As Cover Story Interview – November 2025 Magazine Edition
How do you introduce yourself?
My name is Viktoriia Vasalatii. I am a Ukrainian singer, actress, composer and stage director, currently creating and living on the French Riviera in France. I am a mother of two children, an Honored Artist of Ukraine, and the founder and president of the association “Art. Enfant. Fleur de Lys” in Cannes, where I help children and adults discover their voice — both literally and emotionally — through music and theatre. People often describe me as “the Ukrainian Edith Piaf,” but I see myself simply as a woman who transforms her wounds, her experiences and her love into songs, performances and meaningful encounters with the audience.
Struggle – What hardships have you gone through in life?
I was born and began my artistic career in Ukraine. The war changed everything. I found myself in France with my two children, rebuilding my life, my career, and my artistic activities almost from zero — in a different country, in a new language, without the familiar foundation I once had. There were fears for, total uncertainty, financial difficulties, bureaucracy, and the language barrier. And at the same time, a deep determination not to betray myself and to continue singing and creating. The biggest challenge is being at once a mother, a woman, an artist, a producer and the driving force behind my association. Very often I do the work of a full team: directing, musical supervision, event organisation, partner search, communication, fundraising, ticket sales… These hardships taught me one essential truth: never underestimate the power of one person who truly wants to make something better.
What do people usually not know about you?
Most people see a strong, confident woman on stage with a powerful voice — without imagining how sensitive I truly am, and how often I can be shy. Before every performance, I feel nervous as if it were my very first time. Few people know that I write a lot “for myself”: poetry, music, ideas for plays and monologues. Many of my most honest texts are born late at night, when my children are asleep and I listen to the silence instead of resting. And despite all my stage experience, I still have a very childlike joy for small things: when a child suddenly “discovers” their voice during class; when a spectator comes to me after a concert with tears in their eyes; when someone says: “Your performance gave me hope again.”
What sets you apart from others?
What sets me apart, I believe, is the meeting of several worlds: the emotional depth of Eastern Europe, formal stage and theatre training, original musical creation, and real hands-on experience in artistic production. I don’t simply go on stage to sing songs; I build complete stories — from the first idea of a concert or performance to the final lighting cue. For me, it’s not only about notes, but also about meaning, silence, eye contact, gesture, and presence. I deeply believe in the power of culture and in the importance of children. Bridging Ukrainian and French culture, professional artistry and human sincerity — that is what drives me in every project I create.
What are your upcoming major events?
My main focus today is developing cultural projects on the French Riviera. My upcoming major events include:
- concerts and music-theatre programmes in Cannes and Nice;
- the continued development of the “La Voix du Cœur” project;
- new performances of my musical programme dedicated to Edith Piaf;
- the expansion of activities within my association “Art. Enfant. Fleur de Lys” — more workshops for children, new masterclasses, creative laboratories;
- preparations for an international vocal competition on the Côte d’Azur, along with new original music currently in progress. For me, every new project is an opportunity to connect cultures, audiences and generations.
What expert advice would you like to give?
For artists: Don’t wait for perfect conditions. Create where you are, with what you have. The most powerful projects rarely come from money, but from an inner need to say something important. For women and mothers who are afraid to start over: It is never “too late.” You can change country, language and life — and still remain yourself. Fear will always be there, but you can take it by the hand and walk onto the stage with it. For children and young people: Discipline is the friend of talent. Consistent practice, curiosity and respect transform dreams into reality.
