How do you introduce yourself?
What’s poppin’ Loves and Lovers? My name is Sara Anders but sometimes they call me Sara Speaks. I’m here to uplift you, encourage you, and inspire you. How do I do that? I share with you the things that I am currently growing through and let me tell you it is always growing season! I am an activist, filmmaker, volunteer, and spiritual thought leader who believes that people are more important than profit. I’m an emotional intelligence coach, emcee, creative director, parent leader facilitator, and most importantly; Mom. Regardless of what I do I pray you see God in me and I am able to make a difference in my community.
Struggle – What hardships have you gone through in life?
I have gone through so many “hardships” in life. I prefer to call them lessons with blessins (misspelled on purpose) trapped inside. Before I became a filmmaker, I was a Narrative Restructuring Therapist and Psychiatric Technician at Napa State Hospital for almost a decade. NSH is a psychiatric hospital primarily for people that are not guilty by reason of insanity and not competent to stand trial. TRIGGER WARNING My coworker and friend Donna Gross (May she rest in peace) was unalived by one of the patients I used to work with every day. This incident caused me PTSD and I had to retire as disabled from that career. I went from being the therapist to the patient. Through EMDR and therapy I have been able to maintain my PTSD however it has completely changed my life and how I perceive the world.
What do people usually not know about you?
People usually don’t know, I didn’t meet another Black person until I was 10 years old. I remember her distinctly, her name was Ursula. I grew up in a small town in Oregon with my Caucasian mother, her husband who became my father, and their older 3 kids. I was not the only one, I was the one and only. All that changed when my biological father found me at a high school football game when I was 15. That is what brought me to the SF Bay Area. He is from here. I moved here shortly after I graduated high school and have been here ever since.
What sets you apart from others?
My energy definitely sets me apart from others. It’s is bright, compassionate, empathetic, empowering and strong. My spirituality also sets me apart. I like to tell people I’m half angel, half extraterrestrial and if they stick around long enough they will find out why I say that. Most agree with me. No matter what I’m doing, I pray you see God in me.
What are your upcoming major events ?
I wrote, directed, and produced a short film called “Holy Roller” starring Tyler Perry’s “Sistas” Novi Brown and the one and only Phoenyx Rose. My film is based on a true story when I found $10,000 cash in a night club. It is a comedic, gritty gospel film that will have you asking yourself “What would I do if I found $10,000?”. I have submitted this project to several film festivals. We premiered at Oakland International Film Festival, got an honorable mention at Hollywood Shorts FilmFest and it is still making its rounds. So hopefully my next big event will be a “yes” from the American Black Film Festival or any other festivals I have submitted us to.
What expert advice would you like to give?
The advice I have to give is trust the process (it builds you into who you need to be), find God within yourself (have a spiritual practice not just belief), and build everything with your community at the forefront of your mind. Mental health is the most important health you have and emotional intelligence is vital. Focus on the positive and that’s what you will see. Drink water and mind ya business.
