Rachel Berkowitz As Cover Story Interview – August 2025 Magazine Edition
How do you introduce yourself?
Hello! I go by Rachel Berkowitz or by my nickname, Rachy B. I introduce myself as a Los Angeles-based artist, originally raised in London. I came to Los Angeles to study Fine Art and Art History at UCLA. I’m a painter, photographer and arts educator.
Struggle – What hardships have you gone through in life?
Life as an artist isn’t glamorous behind the scenes. I’ve worked tirelessly to carve out space for my creativity to breathe, often without a safety net. There have been times I wasn’t sure how I’d pay rent or if anyone would care about the work I poured my heart into. I’ve faced the loneliness that comes with pursuing something unconventional and the pressure of constantly showing up when the world doesn’t always understand why you do what you do. But those struggles shaped me. They made me resourceful, sensitive and wildly driven to create beauty from chaos.
What do people usually not know about you?
I have many strange hobbies and passions. I used to play competitive chess. I was a huge rock climber and have done the “van life” trip across the USA, where I rock climbed all throughout the national parks. I am obsessed with hip hop music and I am also a trained musical theater performer.
What sets you apart from others?
I think it’s the way I merge vulnerability with vibrancy. My art isn’t just decorative. It’s a lifeline, a window into something deeper. I’ve built a world where live performance, healing, community, and fine art all coexist. I don’t just make work to hang on walls. I create experiences, conversations and safe spaces through my practice. I am a teacher. I can relate to all ages, all backgrounds. I bring people together and I genuinely care about the impact of creativity on mental wellness, on connection, on how we see each other. That heart is what sets me apart.
What are your upcoming major events ?
I am going to be delivering some very special large painting commissions to clients in London, bringing the artwork rolled up with me from Los Angeles. In London I will be building the frames and stretching the paintings in their homes to live forever. This upcoming month I will be releasing an “Artwork Rental” program for a number of paintings in my studio. For small fee per month, you can rent a piece of artwork for your home, restaurant or retail store, and switch them out every 6 months as you wish. It’s a goal of mine to make artwork accessible for everyone, and having your very own rotating home gallery is certainly a wish I can grant. I am going to be performing my collaborative art performance “Interlace” where I live paint a dress as singer, Xtina Del Valle, sings in Paris during Fashion Week this coming October.
What expert advice would you like to give?
Stay true to yourself. Let your work come from a place of obsession and curiosity, and don’t be afraid to play and explore as you create. Use quality materials — they do make a difference. Make time for creativity, no matter your skill level. And if you’re chasing a creative path, the key is consistency. Keep making, keep writing, keep applying. The only way to grow is to keep going. Don’t give up.
