How do you introduce yourself?
My name is Nika Balina. I introduce myself as an actress, screenwriter, producer, and director. Before the pandemics, I was mostly acting. I shot 64 films and TV shows. During the pandemics, there was almost no shoots in the US happening, so I got time to write scripts which I always wanted! And then I produced and directed one of them. It’s a psychological thriller called “The Sixth Floor.”
What’s the most significant hardship you’ve faced in your career?
My biggest hardship was moving to the US and starting all my life and my career from the beginning. In my home country, I shot 30 TV shows, but I decided to pursue my childhood dream and move to the United States. The American casting directors and talent agencies didn’t care about my acting experience in another country and especially in another language. So, I had to build my resume and filmography from the very beginning.
What do people usually not know about you?
People usually don’t know how persistent I am. Because of my gentle demeanor, people may think I’m quiet and go with the flow. But then many get surprised that I do what I said I planned doing despite many different obstacles and get things done.
What sets you apart from your competitors in the industry?
I think my big and diverse life experience sets me apart from my competitors in the industry. While studying at school, I was attending many different trainings, then I entered the financial university remote program (and graduated after 6 years!) While studying remote, I changed five different jobs during three years and opened my small business. After that, I entered theatrical university and started playing in the theater. Then I started shooting for TV and created my own TV show. Then I moved to the US… So, I don’t usually sit and wait for opportunities; I try to create them.
What are your upcoming major projects?
The psychological thriller “The Sixth Floor” that I wrote, directed, produced, and played the leading role in has just started its festival circuit and has already won at The International New York Film Festival, and got nominated at four other film festivals. In Los Angeles, we had a huge premiere at the Chinese Theater on Hollywood Boulevard. This film is based on true events which were happening in my life during the pandemics. It has an important message warning the audience about the consequences of getting involved in toxic relationships. It’s coming out at the end of 2025.
What expert advice would you like to give?
My expert advice is: always believe in yourself and never stop creating!
