Meister khan As Cover Story Interview – September 2025 Magazine Edition

How do you introduce yourself?

I am a former Comic Book store owner and lifelong connoisseur of Science Fiction and Fantasy. After twenty years running Call Centers for Live Nation and DirecTV as well as working with patients in local Hospitals, I found a home for my encyclopedic knowledge of all things geek with the formation of Meisterkhan Entertainment. Now I share this love through the Too Opinionated Podcast. When I am not podcasting, I oversee a burgeoning business along with my wife Emily which purchases property concentrating on improving their local community. He also enjoys spending time with his soon to be Six grandchildren. My son Brett, who came up with the Podcast and is the best partner, handles all the editing. He is a Children’s librarian during the day and an accomplished writer.

Struggle – What hardships have you gone through in life?

I owned a couple of Comic Book Stores in the 80’s and 90’s. They put me through school. I was married and starting a family and my Mother came down with Breast cancer. That same year her father, my grandfather, passed away. He was a mentor of mine. That year took a lot out of me. Shortly after Marvel Comics went bankrupt and I decided to close the stores. My son Brett came along a few years later. I always regretted closing before he had a chance to enjoy them. My Mother by the way recovered and is still with us. In the late nineties I was diagnosed with Celiac disease. I was running a Call Center for Ticketmaster at the time and I was very ill. Several times a week I was spending the night in the Hospital getting IV fluids because I was malnourished. I would finish my IV, stop at home to shower and head in to work. It was the beginning of the worst period in my life. I am a runner and two years ago my left leg began to drag when I ran. Soon after my face began to tighten, often to the point that it affected my speech. Last year the diagnosis came back as Parkinson’s. It has been difficult with the Podcast but the medication is working pretty well and I am grateful that I have been able to continue.

What do people usually not know about you?

I was in a bad car wreck 12 years ago. I broke my Collarbone in 2 places, my other shoulder, 3 ribs, all of my knuckles, both kneecaps, the orbital bone of my left eye, and my lower back. I tore most of the ligaments in both feet/ankles. It took me 6 months to walk with assistance to the corner and back. It was a full two years before I made it back to the gym. A few fun ones are that I am a huge baseball fan and have played in the same Fantasy league for over 25 years. I am also weirdly incredibly good at body surfing. Like if there was an Olympics for bodysurfing, I could compete.

What sets you apart from your competitors in the industry and in life?

My son and I have been very blessed with our podcast. We are not the most technically sound. We are not the most gifted interviewers. What we are is genuine. We started this podcast as fans, and we have never wavered from that. We treat every guest as a star no matter where they are at in their career. We love what we do, and it is very easy to get excited about everyone that we talk to. We make mistakes, lots of them, but own them and do our best to improve. One of the biggest compliments that we receive is when we are trusted with someone who is new to podcasts or maybe even interviews. We love providing a soft landing and safe space for our guests.

What are your upcoming major events?

We just hit our 1000th episode in July. That’s 6 1/2 years of basically 4 episodes a week. It’s an extremely high volume for a Podcast. We decided early on that we would not turn many down. If someone wants to come on, we want to talk with them. We were lucky to find a few wonderful Managers and Publicists that gave us a chance. From there we have developed relationships with dozens of representatives. When we started 95% of our guests came from our solicitation. Now 95% of our guests are sent to us. IMDB named us a Top 100 Podcast a few years back. It honestly stunned us. We have viewers/listeners in over 100 countries. When I owned the Comic Stores, I participated in dozens of conventions. This September we are providing guests for a first-time convention in our area. Those guests came from personal relationships that we have built. Thrilled that we are getting back into that.

What expert advice would you like to give?

Take chances. If you are like me and just going through the motions in a job that does not inspire you and you have a passion, go for it. Don’t be stupid but take the chance. You never know where it could lead. When our podcast took off, we purchased a building to put our studio in. The building was located on the main street in our hometown. Having that presence has given us opportunities to sponsor events, become involved in our community and even bring in talent to our local theater. Our building also came with 9 rentals. We have since added 4 more properties and have a thriving property business. I retired from those jobs that did not inspire me. None of that would have happened if we had not made that initial leap. Also, be yourself. It’s ok to borrow from others while you are finding your voice but never change what makes you unique. Be weird, be authentic. be you.
