Maria Cabeza As Cover Story Interview – March 2025 Magazine Edition
How do you introduce yourself?
I am a good person, a dreamer, a loyal friend, and a proud mom of a twenty-one-year-old boy. I am a woman who learned to keep going against all odds. I love nature and animals, especially dogs. My curiosity has opened many doors for me. I inherited my dad’s cleverness and common sense. My sense of humor is sarcastic, which helps me navigate life’s challenges.
I enjoy sports like hockey, tennis, and rugby. In my free time, I like watching movies, reading, listening to music from the 80s, and practicing yoga. I am married to Scott H. Thompson, a Scottish-English jazz publicist and my best friend. His grandmother was a member of the MacLeod clan.
Professionally, I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Translation Studies and am a linguist and internationally published writer. I also studied Journalism and owned a boutique in Recoleta, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Oscar Wilde once said, “If you know what you want to be, then you inevitably become it… that is your punishment, but if you never know, then you can be anything. There is a truth to that. We are not nouns; we are verbs. I am not a thing… an actor, a writer… I am a person who does things… I write, I act… and I never know what I am going to do next.”
Childhood to Adulthood
My transition from childhood to adulthood was difficult. My parents’ troubled relationship affected me deeply. As the second-born child, I often felt like I was carrying the weight of the family’s unity. I remember being asked to relay messages between my parents during meals.
Despite the challenges, there were happy times. My eldest sister and I were close, and we enjoyed activities like hockey, baking, and visiting our grandmother’s house with friends. My grandmother, Carmen, was an amazing woman who shared valuable life advice.
At 14, she told me, “María, remember life is beautiful.” I also took ballet lessons, played the harmonica, and spent hours riding my motorcycle with friends. When I was 15, I traveled to London to study, which changed my perspective on life. I lived with a host family and immersed myself in the culture.
After five months, I returned home a different person. I had learned to manage money, express myself confidently, and improve my English skills. I became more refined and mature during my time in London.
At 18, I fell in love for the first time, but it ended badly. I experienced a miscarriage, which was a difficult experience. I broke up with my partner after three years and focused on my studies. I was not the party type and rejected relationships due to my past experiences.
I struggled with anorexia, which forced me to stop playing hockey. Some friends distanced themselves, except for Pablo, who remains a close friend. With the help of therapy, I recovered and continued to pursue my goals.
What hardships have you faced in life?
I experienced a miscarriage at 18 and struggled with anorexia from 12 to 16. My mother attempted to take her own life twice, and I saved her both times when I was 12.
What do people usually know about you?
They know I am kind-hearted and always available to help those in need.
What sets you apart from others in your industry and life?
My resilience in the face of adversity, as well as my determination to speak out against unfairness, low attitudes, and dishonesty.
What are your upcoming major events or projects?
I published a book in 2023 titled “Huellas Demenciales,” which explores the deep wounds that can lead to insanity. I am currently writing my second book about abusive behavior, not only towards women but also amongst women. Additionally, I plan to open a shop in Europe, possibly featuring designers and artists.
What are your food preferences and physical attributes?
I enjoy all types of food and believe that the company and atmosphere are more important than the cuisine itself. As for my physical attributes, I am content with my appearance and have learned from my experiences with anorexia that there is no such thing as a perfect body.
Your love life, relationships, and family?
As I mentioned earlier, I was quiet and introverted in my younger years. My first love experience was at 18, and it ended after four years. I had two more relationships before meeting my current husband, Scott H. Thompson, through LinkedIn. We bonded over our shared passion for jazz music and got married in the USA.
My son, Santiago, is the light of my life, and I am grateful for the love and support of my husband, who has been my rock.
What expert advice would you like to give?
As a human being who has experienced depression and abuse, I would advise others: Do not force anyone to make it, it takes time. Just let that person know that, AT LEAST, one individual in the world cares about him or her.
As a professional I love this quote from journalism: “Have mercy on the readers”
