As a filmmaker Andrew expects to bridge the gap between the indie and studio film, telling intimate stories with strong universal themes on a large scale. In challenging what has been established, the goal is to inspire a new perspective on modern filmmaking.
What hardships have you gone through in life?
Unlike many directors I admire, who seemed to cradle cameras from childhood, my hands first gripped a baseball bat. The baseball diamond was my world. I didn’t grow up framing shots or chasing light; I chased the dream of playing in the major leagues, pouring my heart into a future I could almost touch. But when injury stole that dream, it left a quiet hollow place where ambition once burned. In that stillness, I dove headfirst into my already intense love of film. Stories could be my new field. I’m moved by the magic of movies, how a single moment on screen can tug at your heart and stay with you forever. When I was a kid, films were my refuge away from baseball, wrapping me in stories that lit up my courage and dreams, reminding me I could do anything. They didn’t just entertain me; they helped me find my way in a big, sometimes overwhelming world. That feeling still pushes me today. I aim to create something real and heartfelt that sticks with people long after the screen goes dark, just like those films I loved still lift me.
Where did the idea of your directorial debut “VOICES” come from?

In the years following my fathers passing I’d been nagged by a nondescript voice urging me to do something that would bring his name back into the spotlight. The world, with its relentless pace, seemed to sweep onward, leaving his vibrant legacy in the past. He had poured his soul into every performance, touching countless hearts with his boundless talent and tenacity, and achieved heights that none had before him and none have since his death. Yet, in the swift turning of years, I felt the weight of his story was deserving of more than a fleeting memory. That voice kept growing louder until there was sort of an explosion in me, an overwhelming feeling that life is quickly rolling by and that tomorrow is never guaranteed. I felt if I was going to do something, it had to be now.
Why is telling this story so important to you, and why are you the best person to tell it?
Telling my father Danny Gans’ story through VOICES is an endeavor that stirs a lot of complex emotions in me. It’s a way to hold close the man whose absence I feel intensely as I carve my own path. He was a comforting voice that guided me as a kid, a beacon of grit and grace, yet his light faded before I could fully know him, not just as my father, but as a man, with dreams and burdens I now long to understand. As I pursue my career and step into roles he once held- husband, and father- I feel the weight of his absence, a quiet yearning for his wisdom to steady my steps. This film is my tender rebellion against the many years I didn’t get with him, my way of sitting with him a little longer, piecing together his spirit through the stories he left behind.

Why me? I’m his son, shaped by his triumphs and tender flaws, driven by a love that seeks to honor him, not only as a legend, but as the man I still reach for. VOICES is my bridge to him, ensuring his spirit inspires and endures, a gift to my family, my children and beyond.
Talk to us about the underlying themes of your film?
Through this film, I hope to evoke a deep, shared contemplation on legacy and love, inviting audiences to explore the stories that shape us and the enduring bonds that define our lives. It’s about understanding the past, making peace with it, and using that knowledge to navigate the future. The film is a testament to the enduring power of a father’s influence, the echoes of which continue to shape the lives of those he left behind.
How do you think your unique background sets you apart as a filmmaker?
I started out my journey in the entertainment industry pursuing acting, but soon felt a pull to tell stories in a bigger way. Producing was the perfect way for me to do that and develop my skills as a filmmaker. It laid the foundation and let me dive into every part of filmmaking. What I loved most was pulling it all together: sparking ideas with writers, building out the cast, and keeping the story’s heart alive. It was challenging but exciting, like building something real from the ground up. Shifting into writing and directing is a new adventure, one that feels both daunting and deeply right. It’s a fresh challenge, crafting the words, directing actors and framing shots myself demands a vulnerability and vision I’m still learning to trust. But it’s where I feel my talents can truly shine, where my heart finds its fullest voice. My ambitions lie here, in telling stories and connecting with others in a way that feels honest and lasting.
What does the world need the most right now? And what actions are you taking to make a change in that direction?

Right now, the world craves connection, stories that remind us of our shared humanity, that spark hope and understanding in hearts that feel divided or weary. We’re surrounded by noise, but what we need is meaning, a chance to see ourselves in each other and find light even in the toughest of times. As a filmmaker, I’m working to craft films that don’t just entertain but uplift, that invite people to feel seen and connected. Each step in the process is my way of building a small bridge toward that hope, aiming to share intimate meaningful stories with strong universal themes on a large scale.
As this is your first time attending the Marché du Film in Cannes, what do you hope to gain from the experience?
As a filmmaker stepping into the Marché du Film for the first time, I’m thrilled to explore new horizons for my work. For VOICES, my focus is on finding the right partner to sell or acquire distribution, a company that truly believes in the heart of my father Danny Gans’ underdog story and is passionate about sharing it with the world. I’m looking for someone who sees its potential to inspire and connect, and who will champion its journey to audiences everywhere with the care it deserves.
For my next film, Dark As Night, I’m hopeful to meet collaborators who can help me bring this intimate and gritty crime thriller to life. I want partners who can provide the environment for it to thrive, offering guidance, resources, and a production home that sets me up to grow and succeed in this next chapter of my career. My aim is to find a place that not only nurtures this project but also opens doors to a long, meaningful career, laying a strong foundation for future stories to tell.
