Lena Wu As Cover Story Interview – May 2025 Magazine Edition
How do you introduce yourself?
Hi, I’m Lena Wu — a soprano, classical musician, and sometimes… a comedian! I’ve always felt like I was born to perform. Whether it’s singing, acting, or making people laugh, storytelling is at the heart of everything I do.
What hardships have you gone through in life?
Being a classical soprano is incredibly competitive — there’s often only one lead role, and I reached a point where I almost gave up. I stopped auditioning because it was taking a toll on me. But that break helped me find a new path. I decided to become a multi-faceted artist. Now, I embrace all sides of myself — singing, acting, hosting, even comedy. I realized I don’t have to fit into one box. I can be anything and do anything.
What do people usually not know about you?
Most people don’t know I was born in a small village in China — and believe it or not, I was born out of tune! My whole family is tone-deaf. It took me over 10 years of training to find and shape my voice. It wasn’t natural, it was earned.
What sets you apart from others?
As an Asian artist in the classical music world — which is still quite rare — I bring a unique perspective. I also run a nonprofit organization called East West Artists NYC, where I host all my events with a mission to bridge Eastern and Western cultures through art and genuine human connection. What truly sets me apart is how I blend different art forms — classical singing, comedy, acting, and hosting — to create experiences that bring people together. For me, it’s not just about performing and leaving the stage. I design events where artists and audiences can connect, stay, talk, and network. I believe art should be a two-way experience. Unless you’re already a global superstar, I think our work should be centered around the people who show up to support us. It’s about creating community — not just a performance.
What are your upcoming major events?
I’m hosting a Classical European-style salon concert on the Upper West Side in New York. I’ve rented a beautiful brownstone to create an intimate space for music and meaningful connection. It’s not just a concert — it’s also a networking event for both artists and audiences. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/classical-music-salon-prima-social-at-the-historic-brownstone-tickets-1343812793239?aff=oddtdtcreator
What expert advice would you like to give?
Don’t let other people’s opinions shape your path. Listen to your inner voice, and do what makes you feel alive. It’s not always easy — you’ll have to make sacrifices. But if it brings you joy and purpose, it’s worth it. No pain, no gain.
