Ilaria Sophia As Cover Story Interview – September 2025 Magazine Edition

How do you introduce yourself?

“My name is Ilaria Sophia, but everyone calls me Ila. I’m a ballet student determined to chase my dreams — I started dancing later in life, finding courage through my transition journey. I use social media to share this process and to spread the message that it’s never too late to start. I’m also Italian-American: my mother is from Chicago, and I was raised in Italy before moving to the US in 2021. Today I share stories that mix both cultures — from everyday life in New York to the contrasts between Italy and America — and most of my audience is based in Italy. Alongside dance, I am also the founder of ITGbeauty, my own beauty brand. And, of course, I love posting about my little hamster Ciccio on his own page, “Ciccio del Dwarf.””

Struggle – What hardships have you gone through in life?

“My biggest hardship was my transition as a transgender woman. It wasn’t only physical — it was emotional and social too. For a long time, I felt ashamed and stayed hidden. Moving from Italy to the United States in 2021 gave me the chance to live my transition in peace and find my true place in the world. Starting ballet as an adult was also a challenge — I had to overcome insecurity and the fear of being “too late.” But these struggles made me stronger and gave me a story I now share to inspire others.”

What do people usually not know about you?

“People see me dancing or creating online now, but they don’t always realize how shy and hesitant I used to be. It took a lot of courage to show up. Dance helped me heal and gave me the confidence to connect with others.”

What sets you apart from others?

“What sets me apart is authenticity. I’m not a professional ballerina yet — I’m still a student — but I share every step of the process openly. My story combines transition, migration, and entrepreneurship, told through the lens of someone living between two cultures, Italian and American. This mix, together with my honesty, makes my journey relatable and unique.”

What are your upcoming major events?

“On September 21, I’ll be performing a variation from Giselle at the Thalhè Festival, hosted at the Sarasota Opera House in Florida. It will be my first time dancing ballet on such an important stage, and it’s proof that with dedication and courage, dreams can be achieved no matter where you start.”

What expert advice would you like to give?

“Don’t let fear or shame stop you. Whether it’s starting a new passion, moving abroad, or embracing your identity — it’s never too late. Every step you take authentically can redefine your life and inspire others to follow their own path.”
