Grayson Thorne As Cover Story – January 2024 Magazine Edition
How do you introduce yourself?
Hello! My name is Grayson Thorne Kilpatrick. I’m an actor originally from the Rocket City of Huntsville, Alabama. Before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, I had been living in Los Angeles, immersing myself in the dynamic entertainment scene and pursuing my passion for acting.
Throughout my journey in the industry, I’ve been fortunate to work on a variety of exciting projects that have allowed me to showcase my range and versatility as an actor. One of my most recent roles was in the film Marriage Bites, where I not only portrayed the character of “Corey” but also took on the responsibilities of an intern director. This experience was incredibly rewarding, as it allowed me to delve deeper into the creative process while also honing my skills behind the camera.
In addition to Marriage Bites, I’ve made my mark in Netflix’s gripping anthology series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, where I had the opportunity to be part of a powerful narrative that explores complex themes. I also landed a recurring role in the TBS/Roku Channel sitcom Chad, Season 2, which has been a fantastic experience, allowing me to blend humor with heartfelt moments.
I am deeply passionate about storytelling and find great joy in exploring a diverse array of characters that challenge me and push the boundaries of my craft. Each role I take on is an opportunity for growth, and I relish the chance to bring unique stories to life on screen. My transition from childhood to adulthood has been profoundly impactful, shaped by the events and experiences that occurred early in my life.
As I grew older, I began to see the fruits of my dedication to acting. One of my early notable achievements was landing my first film role in Campin’ Buddies, where I had the incredible opportunity to work alongside acting legends such as Tom Lester, (known for his role as “Ep” in Green Acres), as well as Ray Stevens, Victoria Jackson, and Don Most, famously recognized as “Ralph Malf” from the hit TV series Happy Days. My journey continued with a variety of productions, including a memorable appearance in Adult Swim’s Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell, Season 2, Episode 11 titled “Krampus Nacht,” where I acted alongside talents like Henry Zebrowski and Craig Rowin.
I also had the chance to work on significant projects such as Paramount Pictures’ Daddy’s Home, starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, and the critically acclaimed series Documentary Now! with Fred Armisen and Bill Hader. My role in FX’s Dave, starring Dave Burd, further solidified my commitment to my craft, as did my appearance in ABC’s This Isn’t Working alongside Lisa Schwartz. Additionally, I was part of Netflix’s Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later, where I had the pleasure of working with Skyler Gisondo and Joey Bragg. One of the highlights of my career thus far was a scene in American Horror Story with the legendary Kathy Bates, which was a surreal experience.
My dedication to acting culminated in winning the “Best Actor” award at the Young Artist Awards for my short film John Foley: Motivationally Speaking, a heartfelt tribute to the late Chris Farley, inspired by his iconic SNL skit “Living in a Van Down by the River.” Each of these experiences has played a vital role in my development, contributing to my growth both as an individual and as an artist. They have shaped my understanding of storytelling, deepened my emotional range, and reinforced my commitment to pursuing a career in the performing arts.
Childhood to Adulthood: Describe your transition from childhood to adulthood. What are some notable experiences, challenges, or achievements that stand out?
My transition from childhood to adulthood has been a profound journey shaped by significant experiences and a desire to grow as an actor. At just three years old, my family endured a harrowing home invasion that left us feeling vulnerable and shaken to our core. To help me navigate the emotional turmoil that followed, my parents made the decision to enroll me in Child Play Therapy.
This therapeutic approach provided me with a safe and nurturing environment where I could freely express my feelings and process my experiences through play. It was during these sessions that I was introduced to the world of acting; allowing me to reenact scenarios and channel my emotions creatively and I discovered the transformative power of acting. Engaging in role-play ignited a passion for performance and storytelling that has continued to flourish. This pivotal moment set the foundation for my artistic journey and shaped my aspirations for the future. As I navigated through my childhood, I sought opportunities that would allow me to develop my craft further.
As I transitioned into adulthood, my interest in acting evolved, particularly in the genre of psychological thrillers. I have become increasingly drawn to films that explore the complexities of the human mind and the darker aspects of human nature. Directors like Jordan Peele, known for his masterful storytelling and ability to weave social commentary into thrilling narratives, have inspired me profoundly. His work has sparked my desire to create thought-provoking content that challenges audiences while keeping them on the edge of their seats. Similarly, I admire the performances of actors like James McAvoy, especially in films like Split, where his portrayal of a multifaceted character showcases the depth and range that psychological thrillers can offer.
My journey has been one of continuous learning and exploration. I am eager to tackle more roles that delve into psychological narratives, as I believe they allow for a more profound exploration of character development and emotional intensity. Each project I undertake, whether it’s a light-hearted comedy or a gripping thriller, contributes to my growth as an artist and prepares me for the challenging and exciting roles I hope to pursue in the future. I look forward to the opportunities ahead and the chance to explore the depths of human emotion through storytelling.
Struggle: What hardships have you faced in life, and how did you overcome them?
One significant hardship I faced in my life was the experience of bullying, both in person and online. The cyberbullying came from people I once considered friends, which was particularly painful. It was disheartening to see how some individuals could turn on me, and this negativity was compounded by instances of bullying from adults as well. The impact of this bullying led me to make the difficult decision to stop playing Xbox and PlayStation in 2021, as I wanted to distance myself from the toxic environment and focus on my mental well-being.
During this challenging time, my parents were incredibly supportive. They recognized my struggle with depression and took proactive steps to help me by finding a great therapist who could guide me through these issues. With their support and the help of therapy, I began to work through my feelings, understand the root of my struggles, and develop healthier coping mechanisms.
As I navigated this difficult phase, I found that the times I felt most alive and fulfilled was when I was on set. Being in that environment, meeting new people, and collaborating with fellow actors allowed me to escape my reality and embrace different characters. Each role I take on is an opportunity to transform into someone else, yet I always infuse a bit of Grayson into my performances, making them uniquely my own.
I am also very thankful for my private acting coaches, who have been instrumental in helping me uncover and express my emotions. They have guided me in bringing my feelings to the surface, allowing me to channel my experiences, both good and bad, into my work. This process of acting not only serves as a creative outlet but also as a therapeutic one, enabling me to heal while doing what I love.
In summary, while the hardships of bullying and depression have been significant challenges in my life, I have overcome them with the support of my family, therapy, and my passion for acting. Each experience has contributed to my growth, helping me develop resilience and a deeper understanding of myself, both on and off the stage.
What’s something people usually don’t know about you?
One thing that people might not know about me is that I recently bought my very first car! As a fan of classic vehicles, I chose a 2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS. I absolutely love it! Although it often needs some work, I find great joy in taking on the challenges of maintaining and restoring it. My childhood friends often come over to lend a hand, which not only makes the process more enjoyable but also strengthens our bond. Working on the car has also become a wonderful opportunity for my dad and me to collaborate on something together, creating lasting memories while sharing our passion for classic cars.

It’s not just about the food; it’s about the memories created around the table.
In terms of my physical attributes, I stand at 5’8” with striking red hair and greyish-blue eyes.
I believe it’s essential to embrace one’s individuality, both inside and out, and I take pride in my unique appearance.
