How do you introduce yourself?
Hello, I am Debra Markowitz, a Writer/Director/Filmmaker.
Struggle – What hardships have you gone through in life?
I became a single mother when my daughter was three weeks old. I bought a house I couldn’t afford from my ex, and I manifested writing jobs every time I had $35 left in my bank account. As my husband says, “there’s no way you could have afforded your home, and yet you did it.”
What do people usually not know about you?
I have some processing issues and hearing challenges. I was not diagnosed until my 30s as I was unknowingly an expert at reading lips. When I direct, I have to wear headphones or I cannot hear the actors. I believe that’s my superpower as a director, I focus intently on the emotions of the actors. I’m also colorblind.
What sets you apart from others?
As far as my filmmaking career, although I had been in the industry for decades, I made my first short film in my 50s, and my first feature film in my 60s. I am also guided by my instincts. I may go against what is traditional, but if I listen to my inner voice, I almost never go wrong.
What are your upcoming major events?
I am working on distribution for my current feature film, Wait List: A Love-ish Story. I have several of my films in upcoming film festivals across the Country, and I’m looking forward to beginning my next feature film, Yule Tides.
What expert advice would you like to give?
Integrity and honesty are the basis for anything you do. No matter how successful you may become, it will never have lasting power if there isn’t honesty and integrity behind it. That’s why I call my company, Intention Films and Media. The intention is always to be honest and tell the stories that will touch the people they are supposed to touch.
