Cara Ashley As Cover Story Interview – February 2026 Magazine Edition

How do you introduce yourself?

Hi, I’m Cara Ashley a North Carolina native with a New York soul. I’ve loved theatre, writing, art, and entertainment my entire life, and storytelling has always been at the center of who I am. Now at 34, while navigating stage 4 kidney disease, I’ve gained a deep gratitude for every opportunity to create and connect. That perspective fuels my work and reminds me that art isn’t just what I do it’s how I live.

Struggle – What hardships have you gone through in life?

Listing all of my hardships would probably turn into a novel and I am working on that . One of the most defining challenges in my life began at the start of my artistic academic career, I was diagnosed with stage 3 kidney disease, which quickly progressed to stage 4.

To say it grounded me would be an understatement. My entire world shifted the people around me, the pace of my life, even the way I saw myself. I’ve battled chronic depression for years, and that diagnosis intensified the battle.

But what it ultimately gave me was perspective. It forced me to slow down, to look inward, and to decide who I wanted to be as an artist and as a person. Every day is still an uphill climb but it’s one I’m grateful to take. Being here means I still get to create, to perform, and to tell stories that matter.

What do people usually not know about you?

Something people usually don’t know about me is how much I love to write. It’s always been my personal therapy sometimes easier than talking. Writing fuels my creativity and often shapes the stories I write and art I create.

What sets you apart from others?

What sets me apart? My drive. I’ve faced medical scares, people walking out, even leaving school. Through it all, my commitment to becoming the artist and person I’m meant to be has never wavered. Not everyone finds their true passion, and even fewer have the courage to chase it. I’m proud to be someone who does with heart, backbone, and a refusal to give up, no matter the circumstances.

What are your upcoming major events ?

I’m excited for a couple of big things coming up. I have a meeting with my transplant surgical team at the end of the month, I’m a mix of nerves and excitement as I take another step toward receiving a new kidney. I’m also wrapping up a children’s book about Loonette, a kind hearted witch, she got me through some pretty dark times and I can’t wait to share her and  all her friends with everyone soon!

What expert advice would you like to give?

The best advice I can offer is simple. You’ve probably heard it before, start with small goals, be honest with yourself, and give yourself love and patience. Always follow your dreams, even if no one is in your corner. You might surprise yourself with how strong you really are. Keep going don’t let anything stop you.
