Burcin Ozen As Cover Story Interview – July 2025 Magazine Edition
How do you introduce yourself?
Like a dash of colourful rainbow glimpsing through dark clouds… Positive, proactive and wildly optimistic — that’s me. Are you sure you want to get to know me? Haha, buckle up, because it might just be a wild ride! I’m Burcin Ozen — an Australian creative with a sprinkle of Turkish and Bulgarian heritage, proudly calling Melbourne home. A humanitarian, an activist, and someone who genuinely loves people — all kinds of people, from all walks of life. I truly believe everyone is unique and beautiful, no matter their colour, ethnicity or beliefs. After all, aren’t we all just trying to live a harmonious, peaceful life? By day (and often by night), I’m a creative director, fashion & product stylist, working freelance. My creative playground? Editorial shoots, campaign styling, product styling, and even designing clothes to bring bold concepts to life. Now, about my brand name — Veloute. Sounds fancy, right? The name came from my love of velvet. So I turned to my trusty friend Google Translate, tested ‘velvet’ in just about every language, and voila! Veloute in French! Chic, elegant… until I discovered, quite recently (cue dramatic pause) that Veloute actually means chicken soup. Yes. Chicken soup. Moral of the story? Never blindly trust Google Translate — but hey, it’s too late now. Veloute has become part of who I am, and frankly, it still sounds fabulous. Besides, who doesn’t love a bit of chicken soup for the creative soul? Some of my most treasured moments have been seeing my work published internationally. Out of millions of creatives out there — my work made it. Wow. Still pinching myself! Here are a few highlights: STRONGER TOGETHER in Teencruze magazine, California, WORLD OF SURREAL in Imirage magazine, Canada, DEATH BY TIDES in Mobjournal, Milan, Italy, FENG SHUI in Stylecruze magazine, California, USA, SEDUCE in Provocator magazine, OUR DIFFERENCES DEFINE OUR BEAUTY in Moevir magazine, France. To my incredible creative team — thank you! Your hard work, dedication, sweat (and occasional tears) made all this magic possible. Go dream team! Whenever I create a concept, it’s never just about the clothes or the look. It must carry a message — powerful enough to leave an imprint, spark conversation, inspire, empower and bring something positive to the world. If my audience walks away feeling moved or thinking differently, then I’ve done my job. So, that’s me — Burcin Ozen. Equal parts velvet and chicken soup, with a passion for creativity that’s louder than my coffee addiction. And if I could leave you with one piece of advice? Stay true to your vision, stay humble, and always, always remember to laugh at yourself — especially when Google Translate turns your ‘velvet’ into soup.
Struggle – What hardships have you gone through in life?
Hardships, healing and the art of not letting them dim my light Life hasn’t always been velvet and editorials. Behind every polished photo shoot and magazine spread, there’s a story stitched with tears, doubt, and grit. At times, people tried to dim my light — some subtly, others like a gust of wind trying to snuff out a candle. They questioned my worth, mocked my dreams, and made me believe I wasn’t enough. But funny thing about light: it might flicker, but it doesn’t go out when its source is within. For years, my healing became my private revolution. I explored ancient and modern healing methods, practiced self-reflection, and found that creativity was my anchor — a way to ground swirling emotions and thoughts into something raw and beautiful. I became fiercely mindful of how my thoughts and emotions shaped the energy I brought into the world. And through that awareness, I realised the criticism and cruelty I faced were never really about me — they were reflections of wounds that weren’t mine to carry. Generational cycles? Oh, I broke those too. Patterns passed down silently, quietly shaping how we see the world. Breaking them wasn’t easy; it meant questioning deeply ingrained beliefs and refusing to live by scripts written before I was even born. But change starts with choice — and choice starts with awareness. And through it all, there was a light that never dimmed: my children. Being a single mother wasn’t easy — some days felt like holding the universe together with nothing but love and stubbornness. But Halil and Alara moulded me into who I am. They taught me patience, perseverance, and what unconditional love truly feels like. In my darkest moments, they were my brightest light. I’m endlessly blessed — truly the luckiest mother on earth. They’re kind, loving, independent, and carry hearts that I know will make a positive mark on the world. My kids are also my best friends; we can talk about anything, openly and fearlessly. I raised them to be strong and to have a voice — and watching them walk their own paths fills me with a pride words can barely hold. Thank you, Halil and Alara, for choosing me to be your mother. You two are, and always will be, my greatest masterpiece. Today, my scars aren’t hidden; they’re woven into my art. And now, when someone crosses my path lost in their own night, I try to be the gentle reminder: every darkness needs a light, and sometimes, it only takes one spark to guide someone home.
What do people usually not know about you?
Here’s my secret: I’m deeply intuitive. I can often see beyond words — into people’s true intentions, hidden motives, and quiet fears. Sometimes it’s a gift; it helps me protect my peace and keep distance where it’s needed. But sometimes, it feels like a curse — because the people I trusted most had the power to leave the deepest wounds. Beyond fashion, I’m endlessly fascinated by quantum physics and the mysteries of human consciousness. I’ve read countless books on reprogramming the mind and how energy shapes reality. It’s mind-blowing, humbling, and makes me see creativity itself as a kind of energetic language. And yes, between campaigns and creative chaos, I’m still a piano beginner — but determined to one day play like a pro. Even if my “Chopsticks” still sounds more like falling cutlery.
What sets you apart from others?
My father always teased me about being “weird” — in the most loving way. I like to call it being an extra-terrestrial, haha. I’ve always done things differently, danced to my own rhythm, and lived a little outside the lines. I’m unconventional and unorthodox; I deviate from social norms, choosing to create, dress, think, and live in ways that don’t always match the mainstream. It hasn’t always been easy; it can lead to moments of isolation. But it’s also the wellspring of my creativity and authenticity — the very thing that makes my work resonate.
What are your upcoming major events?
There’s always something brewing. Right now, I’m collaborating with other designers to create work that’s not just beautiful, but moving — pieces that spark conversation, challenge norms, and leave a lasting imprint. I’ll also be attending upcoming fashion events, like the one hosted by the incredibly talented Ashh Balouchh, where she’ll reveal her newest designs. And the dream closest to my heart: launching my own versatile fashion collection designed for all genders. Fashion shouldn’t be boxed by labels or expectations — it should be a canvas for everyone.
What expert advice would you like to give?
Live by the PPP’s and DDD’s: Patience, Persistence, Perseverance — and Drive, Discipline, Dedication. These aren’t just pretty words; they’re the bones and breath behind every dream turned real. And above all: Stay true to your vision. Stay humble. And always, always remember to laugh — especially if you discover that the brand name you lovingly chose to mean “velvet”… actually means chicken soup. Never give up, no matter how impossible it feels. Every challenge is a blessing in disguise, shaping you into someone stronger, wiser, and infinitely more interesting. So here’s to being weird, to healing, to fashion that speaks — and to dancing somewhere between velvet and chicken soup.
