Alexandria Garcia As Cover Story Interview – May 2026 Magazine Edition

How do you introduce yourself?

Hello, I’m Alexandria Garcia, a ballerina living with multiple sclerosis, a proud advocate for the MS community, and former Miss Congeniality of New Jersey 2024. I’m also a former biology teacher and realtor. At heart, I’m someone who believes deeply in people, in art, business and science. I try to live in a way that reminds others they can too can keep living life happily, with a purpose. My life is rooted in strength, not only physically, but mentally and spiritually. I also hold my family very close to my heart, they are a big part of who I am and the strength behind me.

Struggle – What hardships have you gone through in life?

Before MS changed my life, I was on a very clear path. I earned my bachelor’s degree in science, became a biology teacher, and obtained my real estate license in New Jersey. I had a vision for my future, and I worked hard to build it.

The Summer of 2018, at 28 years young eververything completely changed, I was eventually diagnosed with remitting and relapsing multiple sclerosis. After already going through scoliosis surgery at 15, my MS  diagnosis at 28 became life-threatening. My family was preparing for the worst…they were making funeral arrangements. Thankfully the brave, resilient and brilliant geniuses of society at Holy Name Hospital, revived me through 4 plasmaphoresis exchange therapies and I came back. Unfortunately when I was able to see and talk, I was told I would never walk again, I will be wheelchairbound.

I went from complete independence to being in a wheelchair. A ramp would have to be built for the very home I once proudly sold to my Mother. I couldn’t drive anymore. I lost my independence, my routine, and the life I had worked so hard for. Starting over from nothing at a young age was one of the hardest things I’ve ever faced. It forced me to rebuild not just physically, but mentally and emotionally. The harsh reality of life has taken toll, diagnosis of MS, I was forced to resign from the careers I love, to give all my attention to this MS auto immune disease that is attacking me, my nerves. In life one must adapt, so I did. I decided to start ballet! That was the best decision of my life. Ballet is one of the toughest things I’ve ever done, and continue to do…not only physically, mentally.

What do people usually not know about you?

People don’t always see the more personal side of me. I love playing the piano, dancing in different styles, being around animals, and spending time in nature… parks or oceans. I also enjoy simple things like board games. Those moments keep me grounded and remind me to enjoy life beyond everything I’ve been through. (PS I know sign language).

People don’t always realize how much discipline it takes for me to do what I do. The control, the awareness, the connection to my body, it’s something I have had to develop on a very deep level and learn. There’s a quiet strength behind everything, and a constant focus on maintaining balance physically and mentally.

What sets you apart from others?

Learning how to work with my body instead of against it. I have learned how to adapt and rebuild. I don’t see challenges as the end; I see them as a shift into something new. There’s always someone out there searching for the next solution, the next breakthrough, the next cure. That mindset keeps me moving forward. What sets me apart is my ability to turn adversity into awareness, and to keep evolving instead of giving up. That connection allows me to move with intention and awareness in a way that feels different. I’ve turned something that could have limited me into something that refined me.

What are your upcoming major events?

I recently moved to Florida and am dancing with The Gulf Shore Ballet Academy in Fort Myers. In addition, when the MS Society calls on me to speak, whether in English or Spanish, or to perform, I show up. It’s important for me to be present and to demonstrate that anything is possible!

I am working closely with my boyfriend, who is a film director and producer, assisting on projects that I’ll also be a part of. I’m also involved in helping my family with their Airbnb business in Puerto Rico.

I’m focused on continuing my advocacy within the MS community and expanding my presence across different platforms in a more intentional way. I’m also working toward building something meaningful that combines healing, movement, and support for others going through similar challenges.

What expert advice would you like to give?

It is not the end, it is a new beginning. Life can change quickly, but that doesn’t mean it’s over. It means you’re being introduced to a new version of your life that requires adaptation. Trust that there are always people working toward solutions and progress. Stay connected to your family, stay grounded in who you are, and learn how to move forward in your own way. Love and Be Loved Always!
