Desirae L. Benson As Cover Story Interview – August 2026 Magazine Edition
How do you introduce yourself?
I’m Desirae L. Benson, a multi-award-winning entertainment publicist, award-winning multimedia journalist, national red-carpet host and interviewer, entrepreneur, and professional member of the Recording Academy. I’m also a three-time GRAMMY U Mentor and have had the privilege of working with more than 300 brands throughout my career.
Over the years, I’ve been incredibly grateful to receive recognition for my work, including Communicator Awards, Culture Keeper of the Year, recognition as one of the Top 100 Women in Media, and being named among the 100 Most Influential Women in Media. I’ve also been honored to serve as a judge for prestigious industry competitions, including the W3 Awards and the Communicator Awards.
I never take any of those accolades or opportunities for granted. What means the most to me is being able to use the experience I’ve gained throughout my career to connect with, mentor, inspire, and share knowledge with people from all around the world. Every opportunity has contributed to the person and professional I am today, and I’m extremely grateful for the journey.
Struggle – What hardships have you gone through in life?
One of my biggest challenges used to be time management and learning how to balance everything I had going on. When you’re ambitious and have multiple things happening at once, it can become very easy to put yourself last.
I don’t do that anymore. I’ve learned that prioritizing myself actually allows me to show up better in every other area of my life. Self-care is non-negotiable for me, and so are my boundaries. I’m constantly pouring into other people professionally and personally, so I make sure I’m pouring back into myself just as intentionally. Learning that has changed the way I move through life.
What do people usually not know about you?
People are sometimes surprised to learn how much of the world I’ve experienced. I’ve lived internationally, including several years in Asia and time in Europe, and I’ve traveled extensively throughout the world.
Those experiences exposed me to different cultures, people, languages, perspectives, and ways of life, and I believe they’ve had a tremendous influence on the way I communicate and connect with people today.
There’s actually quite a bit about my life and experiences that people don’t know—and I like keeping some things that way. I believe you can share your story without sharing every chapter.
What sets you apart from others?
I don’t spend a lot of time trying to figure out what everyone else is doing. I know what I bring to the table.
My background crosses publicity, journalism, entertainment, interviewing, branding, education, mentorship, and media, so I’m able to see things from several different perspectives. I understand both sides of the media relationship—what makes a story compelling and how to strategically position someone so their story gets noticed.
I’m also very intentional about relationships. Credentials and accolades are wonderful, and I’m proud of mine, but how you treat people and the reputation you build when nobody is watching will always matter.
What are your upcoming major events?
There are several things developing that I’m really excited about, both personally and professionally, but I’ve learned not to announce everything while it’s still being built.
I’m continuing to expand my brand, my PR business, my work in media, and my presence in new markets. There are also some exciting opportunities and events ahead that align perfectly with where I see myself going next.
I believe in letting things develop before I talk too much about them. When it’s time for people to know, they’ll know.
What expert advice would you like to give?
I’m actually careful about giving people advice because everyone’s path is different. What works for me may not necessarily be what someone else needs.
But if I had to share one thing, it would be this: be authentically who you are.
You don’t have to explain every decision, announce every move, or allow everyone access to what you’re building. Protect your peace, establish boundaries, continue growing, and make the decisions that are right for the life you want.I’ve learned that you can be visible without being completely accessible. There is power in allowing some things to remain yours.
