Christopher Chin As Cover Story Interview – July 2026 Magazine Edition
How do you introduce yourself?
I’m Christopher Chin, founder and CEO of The Hidden Speaker, with a mission to help professionals around the world who feel unrecognized become unforgettable. Through keynotes, private coaching, and corporate training, I teach the communication, presentation, and storytelling skills leaders need today to succeed in the age of AI.
Struggle – What hardships have you gone through in life?
I’m grateful for the life I have and the community I’ve built around me. But as a kid, I never imagined this was possible. Painfully shy, I couldn’t speak up in class. I couldn’t talk to peers. I was passed over for opportunities because I wasn’t visible and I thought I’d never find my confidence.
One day though, my chemistry teacher in high school pulled me aside. She told me how brilliant my work was and complimented the exceptional effort I put into every assignment. To let others see my brilliance too, she strongly encouraged me to share more with others and try answering more questions during class.
That was a turning point in my life. I realized how much I had to offer. And most importantly, it was my responsibility to make that value clear. I began to come out of my shell, a little bit every day. Now, as a TEDx and international keynote speaker, I built the confidence to speak on stages around the world.
What do people usually not know about you?
I started my professional career as a film composer, writing soundtracks for directors. I thought it was the perfect job because it was highly creative and gave me the opportunity to tell stories people enjoyed. Plus, I could sit behind a screen for hours and not talk to anyone! But it was precisely because I didn’t talk to anyone that I failed to network and get enough gigs to make that career sustainable.
So I pivoted to tech, telling stories with data to help Fortune 500 companies improve profit and efficiency. It was another job where I thought I could sit behind a screen and not talk to anyone. And once again, I was proven wrong. I needed to lead meetings, give presentations, and manage often difficult conversations with stakeholders and executives. I realized how important effective communication was for success as a modern business professional.
That’s exactly why I started my business, The Hidden Speaker, in 2023. By becoming a public speaking coach, I could leverage everything I learned in music about hooking attention and creating experience, and everything I learned in the corporate world about visibility and executive presence. Most importantly, I had a chance to help others tell their stories so they could make their value clear and accelerate their career.
What sets you apart from others?
When I transitioned into tech, I thought my background in music was a liability. I doubted anyone would want to hire me compared to candidates with formal degrees and years of experience. But in both the public and private sector, my managers told me music gave me several advantages: the ability to connect, innovate, and perform under pressure.
As a coach and corporate trainer today, I teach communication through a unique musical lens. Great public speakers use melody, rhythm, tonality, and emotion. They learn through discipline, practice, and continuous improvement. They improvise successfully in high-stakes situations (even after making a mistake!) because the show must go on. It is this unique teaching approach that helps me make communication a fun and enjoyable topic to learn for audiences of all ages, roles, and areas of expertise.
What are your upcoming major events?
The biggest initiative for me this year is my upcoming book “Noteworthy: Faster Thinking, Clearer Speaking, Powerful Presentations.” In it, I break down the principles from music, psychology, and neuroscience that empower professionals to speak with authentic confidence and influence effortlessly. Rather than dozens of different tips to memorize, I teach my single proven system for handling the most common communication challenges in the workplace through in-depth examples, visual frameworks, and interactive exercises. I’m so excited to get the book out there soon and hope it can provide a refreshing take on a timeless skill to help every professional own the rooms they’re in.
What expert advice would you like to give?
Confidence is not just an inborn trait. It’s a learnable skill. Every day push yourself to be just a little more uncomfortable than you were yesterday. Not so much that you feel overwhelmed and anxious. But just enough that you feel your abilities being stretched. Using that approach, I went from being the most quiet, introverted kid in school to the speaker I always wanted to be. And by doing the same, you can claim your voice and unlock your full career potential.
