Marissa Clopton As Cover Story Interview – March 2026 Magazine Edition

How do you introduce yourself?

Hello! I am Marissa Clopton, a K–8 grade school counselor in the Neshaminy School District, where I advocate daily for the emotional well-being and growth of students at Core Creek Elementary and Carl Sandburg Middle School. My work is rooted in connection. When students feel safe, they rise. When they feel understood, they lead. I strive to be a consistent, empowering presence — helping young people build confidence, navigate challenges, and discover the strength they already carry within them.

Struggle — What hardships have you gone through in life?

The summer before my junior year of high school was the most difficult season of my life. Within three months, I lost four people — including one of my childhood best friends. Grief at that age changes you. It forces you to grow in ways you never expected. At the same time, I was quietly navigating anxiety, learning how overwhelming emotions can feel when you don’t yet have the tools to manage them. But in the midst of that pain, I found something life-changing: support. My high school counselor became a steady presence during a time when everything felt uncertain. Having someone who truly listened, validated my feelings, and helped me process my grief showed me the power of what one caring adult can do.

Those experiences didn’t break me — they built me. They strengthened my resilience, deepened my empathy, and gave my work lasting purpose. Today, when students walk into my office carrying anxiety, grief, or feelings they can’t yet put into words, I don’t just understand them professionally — I understand them personally. And that lived experience is what fuels my commitment to be the kind of counselor every child deserves.

What do people usually not know about you?

What people don’t always see about me is how deeply I feel. I wear my heart on my sleeve. I love deeply, care deeply, and show up fully for the people in my life. I am sensitive, and I’ve come to see that as one of my greatest strengths. My ability to feel deeply allows me to connect authentically, to lead with empathy, and to sit with others in their most vulnerable moments without turning away.

At the same time, I am confident, resilient, and grounded. I have walked through loss, anxiety, and growth, and those experiences have shaped me into someone who is both strong and compassionate. My family and friends are my foundation. They are my steady support, my encouragement, and my reminder of who I am outside of any title or role. And my boyfriend has been an unwavering source of strength and partnership; someone who supports my purpose and challenges me to continue growing. The love and support I receive in my own life is what fuels the love and support I pour into my students each day.

What sets you apart from others?

What sets me apart is my ability to feel deeply while remaining grounded and confident. I don’t shy away from emotion — I lean into it. I create spaces where vulnerability is safe and strength is built. My sensitivity allows me to connect, but my resilience allows me to lead. That balance shapes everything I do.

What are your upcoming major events?

I’m entering a season defined by gratitude and growth. Closing out another impactful school year is always meaningful; it’s a reminder of the difference steady support can make in a child’s life.

At the same time, I’m celebrating major milestones alongside some of my closest friends as a bridesmaid in their weddings. It’s a season filled with love, commitment, and deep connection.

More than anything, this chapter represents stepping confidently into adulthood; embracing growth, strengthening my sense of self, and continuing to evolve into the woman and professional I aspire to be.”

What would be your Expert Advice?

Always choose kindness. Choose it in your words, in your reactions, and in the way you treat yourself. The world is shaped by small daily decisions.

Understand that your happiness is not dependent on circumstances or other people — it is built from within. You have more control over your mindset and your direction than you realize.

And never abandon what you want simply because the process feels uncomfortable. The most meaningful growth often requires courage and consistency. The path may not be linear, but persistence paired with belief in yourself is powerful.
