How do you introduce yourself?
I typically introduce myself as a former Chief Executive Officer of a national technology company. More recently, I have added that I am a published Author.
Struggle – What hardships have you gone through in life?
I wrote a book, “The Power of Scars – My journey from Refugee to CEO”, to share my personal and professional struggles. I was motivated to share my story due to the increasing examples of racism and the need for more individuals of color to contribute to change. My book is a vulnerable storytelling style that shares my journey from arriving in Canada as a refugee to my career progression to a Chief Executive Officer.
What do people usually not know about you?
People don’t know that I struggled in school and had to work diligently to get passable grades. I developed a love of learning and teaching, and my motivation to write my book was to open the curtain on the misconceptions people have about individuals who achieve senior roles in the corporate world.
What sets you apart from others?
What sets me apart is that I have reached a stage in my life where it is more important to me to help others and to teach. I believe my role as a senior leader is to elevate others to their greatest potential, and by doing so, they benefit, I benefit, and the companies I lead also benefit.
What are your upcoming major events?
I recently celebrated the book launch of my first book on July 22, which commemorated both the launch of my book and my decision to retire. It was an unforgettable moment for me, and I was surrounded by close friends, family, and colleagues.
What expert advice would you like to give?
When facing social adversity in the corporate world, recognize it is a function of your attributes, not a commentary on your character. Your character will always define you, and it’s essential to focus on developing your character to achieve leadership positions.
