How do you introduce yourself?
I’m Gordon Lownds, the Canadian entrepreneur who co-founded and drove the startup of the $1 Billion + enterprise – Sleep Country Canada – and then Listen UP Canada. I’m a recovering drug addict, an advocate for mental health and addiction causes, and a storyteller – the author of Cracking Up – from rising star to junkie despair in 1,000 days – an unlikely addict’s memoir.
Struggle – What hardships have you gone through in life?
I left home at age 15 and was a full-time carney by age 17, traveling throughout the USA and Canada. I’ve led a charmed life, but falling prey to a debilitating drug addiction in my late 40’s and being able to recover has been a death-defying high-wire act of epic proportions.
What do people usually not know about you?
My carney background was instrumental in how I came to view life and human nature. I had always wanted to be a professional musician, worked hard at it, and later took an entry-level job in retail. I also performed as one of Canada’s first two male go-go dancers for a week.
What sets you apart from others?
A combination of serendipity and fearless opportunism has propelled me forward, fueled by a strong work ethic. I have a high tolerance for risk-taking, great marketing instincts, and a reputation for speaking with radical candor. I won’t settle for less than an ideal product/service offering and always deliver on what I promise.
What are your upcoming major events?
August 15, 2025, is the launch date of my book – Cracking Up – from rising star to junkie despair in 1,000 days – an unlikely addict’s memoir.
What expert advice would you like to give?
Being successful as an entrepreneur requires being resilient, fanatically goal-oriented, and coldly analytical and decisive. To discover ideas for a new business, remain curious and open to learning. Managing a business for cash flow – not profits – is the key to survival.
