Jessie Weber Kass As Cover Story Interview – August 2025 Magazine Edition
Introduce yourself and tell us about your new short A Nice Lady?
Hi, I’m Jessie Weber Kass, a filmmaker based in Brooklyn, New York. A Nice Lady is a short film about Gwen, a solitary artist whose life changes when she meets two younger strangers and invites them to stay in her luxury apartment. As they help her sell her artwork, old memories and fears resurface, leading to an emotional unraveling. Watch the trailer here: https://vimeo.com/1103539836
Tell us about how you started in the film industry?
My journey into filmmaking began with my father, who is also a filmmaker. I grew up watching and working with him, and later majored in acting and directing in college. After college, I pursued a career in theatre, which eventually led me to writing and storytelling. I started writing A Nice Lady during the pandemic as a way to process the world around me.
What challenges, hardships, or lessons have you experienced in life that have inspired you and your work?
One challenge that has shaped me is being a small woman who is sometimes overlooked. This tension between being seen and unseen has influenced my storytelling and the characters I create.
What do people usually not know about you?
People don’t know that I’m a very serious person beneath my playful exterior. I’m always observing, feeling deeply, and thinking critically, especially when it comes to real-life narratives.
What sets you apart from your colleagues in the industry and in life?
What keeps me grounded is being a real, genuine person navigating everyday battles, including being a mother to a vulnerable and lovely 11-year-old girl. I’m focused on guiding her to become a strong, thoughtful adult woman.
What upcoming projects are you excited to share?
I’m finalizing the script for my first feature film, which we hope to move into pre-production soon, while also developing both an episodic treatment and a feature-length script for A Nice Lady.
What expert advice would you like to offer?
In filmmaking, preparation is key, but don’t get caught up in making things perfect before you start. Play begins in doing the work and planting your unique seeds.
