Chaz Ebert As Cover Story Interview – September 2025 Magazine Edition
How do you introduce yourself?
Hello, I’m Chaz Ebert, the publisher of the informative movie review site, (Rogerebert.com.) Yes, I am the widow of the late, beloved film critic Roger Ebert. But more than titles, I think of myself as someone who is committed to elevating humanity through forgiveness, empathy, compassion, and kindness, what I call The FECK Principles. At heart I’m a woman who believes in using her platform to amplify kindness in a world that needs more of it.
Struggle – What hardships have you gone through in life?
I grew up during a time when being a Black woman in America came with challenges that required resilience. From breaking through barriers in my legal career to making my way in the entertainment and publishing worlds, I’ve had to turn obstacles into opportunities. And I have tried to balance these milestones while devoting women and extended family to make sure that those around me felt loved and cared for. And I am fortunate that along the way I have encountered so many kind and generous people! Personally, one of the hardest periods was losing Roger. Navigating grief while carrying forward his legacy was both painful and healing. It allowed me the grace of continuing Roger’s voice in a way that still allows my own to be heard.
What do people usually not know about you?
Most people don’t know that I have a playful, fun-loving side! Even though I can be quite serious when advocating for the rights and needs of others stemming from my law school discipline, I also love to laugh, dance, and enjoy life. Roger and I shared that joy, and I still find it important to not take everything too seriously. Two of the most fun things I have ever done is dance on stage with Michael Jackson and the Jackson Five at the Broadway Strand in Chicago many years ago; and dance on stage with Prince at the United Center on September 25, 2012. (If anyone has footage of this, please send it to me).
What sets you apart from your competitors in the industry and in life?
I don’t view myself as competing in the traditional sense. What sets me apart is that my work is rooted in values. Whether through (Rogerebert.com ) or my book “It’s Time to Give a FECK: Elevating Humanity Through Forgiveness, Empathy, Compassion and Kindness,” I remind myself that humanity matters as much as success. From my end of the looking glass, when I think back on my experiences in law, the creative arts and business, my perspective is shaped by a blend of analytical thinking and heartfelt empathy. This allows me to connect with people across industries and cultures.
What are your upcoming major events?
Recently I participated in panels, film festivals, broadcast and print events to promote my book, “It’s Time to Give a FECK: Elevating Humanity Through Forgiveness, Empathy, Compassion and Kindness.” I realized that a book tour alone will not amplify my call to action for all of us to live with more empathy and compassion. Nor will it do enough to bring diverse voices into the spotlight. So the FECK Awards were born! On April 4, 2026, in Chicago, we will host an awards night to honor those people from the United States and Canada who make a positive difference in this world! That is something that I am extremely excited about. I am hoping that it will not be just a one-night event, but a movement to celebrate the values of humanity I cherish most. And also an opportunity to highlight those special people who live these values.
What expert advice would you like to give?
Practice empathy every single day. It’s one of the most underrated skills in both business and personal life. When you truly listen and put yourself in someone else’s shoes, doors open. It doesn’t mean you have to be a doormat. But remember that success without kindness is hollow. Whatever you achieve, make sure you lift others as you rise. That is the true measure of a legacy. Don’t let fear stop you. Most people are too busy worrying about themselves to notice your mistakes. Be bold, take chances, and lead with compassion.
